It's No Turkey

On Thanksgiving, this will be happening. I know "Gardein Holiday Roast Day" doesn't have quite the snap that "Turkey Day" has to it, but it will do. I'm trying a different brand this year. (Last year was the Field Roast Celebration Roast.) My expectations will be low and my sides will be many. We're expecting 8 - 12 people this year.

I'm trying out this Bobby Flay recipe my friend Jen sent me because what's Thanksvegan without a little kale? There will be vegan mashed potatoes, and a sweet potato or squash situation that I have yet to decide on. Maybe some green beans. Not a lot of raw, but a lot of vegan-y things. I'm thinking of picking up a vegan pumpkin pie or two from Whole Foods. (The one I got last year at a local vegan restaurant super-sucked.)

*This is not a Gardein Holiday Roast sponsored post. I don't even know if I'll like this little veg-brick yet. I'll let you know.

Fuyu. No, fuYU.

Have you guys ever had a Fuyu persimmon? Until very recently, I had only had the pointy kind of persimmons that have black seeds and are only good if they are mushy because if you eat them before they're ripe you can't get the bad feeling out of your mouth for a couple of hours.

Anyway.

Fuyus are fantastic. No seeds, not even a core, you can eat the whole thing. They have more of a pear-like texture but still taste persimmon-ish. These are my new favorite (raw) thing, and it's persimmon season right now so they're around. You should get some.

That's all. Just have a Fuyu and thank me later.

Back At It

I spent Saturday night having dinner with my friends; the friend doing the Whole30, the friend who doesn't eat red meat, dairy or gluten, the omnivore friend, and me, the raw vegan. What did we come up with in the food department? Gazpacho with avocado, spinach salad, roasted vegetables, tofu chocolate pudding and mixed berries. Everyone found a few things they could eat and we did all manage to get full, and as always, had a great time.

Yesterday was my birthday. I knew I would be in restaurants for brunch and dinner so I set aside the raw and just went vegan for the day. Brunch was vegan chillaquilles, dinner was grilled vegetable tacos. There were some sweets too including vegan coconut cake. Fabulous. Today I'm back to raw.

What I ate today:
• coffee
• berries - strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries
• mixed nuts
• one - Two Raw Moms blueberry burst bar
• green juice - apples, spinach, cucumber, celery, parsley, lemon, lime, ginger
• green salad - kale, char, spinach w/olive oil and nutritional yeast
• celery sticks with guacamole
• apple
• of course, more coffee

I Went to Chipotle

I didn't eat the succulents. Those are just for pretty.

Today we went to Chipotle and I did Chipotle raw. Yes I did. I had a salad (romaine) with pico de gallo and guacamole on it. It was lovely. And yes, it did fill me up. Fast food win.

Tonight I'm eating dinner with friends. Between the four of us we have one raw vegan, one who's not eating red meat, dairy or gluten, one who's doing the Whole30, and one omnivore. This crazy bunch will all be bringing stuff to share, potluck style, knowing that we'll each have at least one thing we can eat, maybe more if we're lucky. I'll let you know how that goes.

Today I ate:
• coffee
• banana
• mixed nuts
• Chipotle salad
• iced tea
• Two Moms in the Raw Goji Berry Nut Bar
• frozen red and green grapes
• and whatever happens tonight - I'll fill you in tomorrow.

Ch-ch-ch-chia

Are you familiar with chia seeds? Yes, they're the same thing that created the green hair growing out of that Mr. T Chia Pet you had on your kitchen counter back in the day. Apparently they're an Omega-3 Superfood. Are they delicious? I don't think they have a taste, really. They are more of a texture, a slimy, viscous texture.

I recently tried this juice smoothie from Trader Joe's that features ch-ch-ch-chia. It only has three ingredients: apple juice, strawberry puree, and chia seeds. The flavor is all strawberry. If you can get past all of the tiny little seed particles in it (and I can) it's good stuff. That's a lot of fruit sugar though, so you might want to go easy on the stuff.

What I ate today:
• coffee
• banana
• raw mixed nuts
• 1/2 Trader Joe's Strawberry Chia 100% Juice Smoothie
• salad - lettuce, almonds, micro greens w/olive oil, nutritional yeast
• COFFEE
• frozen green and red grapes
• celery with cashew cheese from the farmer's market
• green juice - celery, apple, cucumber, lettuce, kale, spinach, lime, lemon, parsley

Say Cheese

When I first started the raw thing, I may have made fun of this "bread," (Who, me?) and swore I'd never buy it again. It's ridiculously priced (10 bucks for 25 small squares) and not very bread-like (more like soft crackers) BUT if you've been doing this raw deal for long enough that you're no longer afraid of the words "cashew cheese," these little squares are a good way for getting the "cheese" into your face.

The point for me isn't to replace raw fruits and vegetables with weird food pretending to be other food but sometimes even cheese that isn't cheese is better than no cheese. Mmm cheese.

What I ate today:
• coffee
• banana
• handful of mixed nuts (raw, unsalted)
• 3 pieces of raw/v Mango Bread with raw/v cashew "cheddar" I picked up at the farmer's market
• kale salad w/ olive oil, nutritional yeast
• celery w/raw almond butter
• coffee
• gazpacho (tomatoes, cucumber, onion, red pepper,  jalapeño, garlic w/ 1/2 an avocado
• blueberries
• so. much. water.

I'm Back

That's a "pink apple." Yellow on the outside pink on the inside and costs much more than a regular apple. My review: It tastes just like an apple.

A number of people have asked me lately if I'm still doing raw. The answer is yes. The past few months I have had varying degrees of raw and 98% vegan with a stray omelette in there. But right now? I am back. 100% raw. I was starting to feel squishy with less energy and overall not as awesome as possible - and my number one goal is always: Be as awesome as possible.

Making the change back to raw (or my version which is "raw with coffee") has been easy enough the past few days. I'm just getting back into the rhythm of it all and stocking up on my favorite raw stuff.

What I ate today:
• coffee
• 1 banana
• handful of mixed raw nuts - almonds, cashews, pecans, Brazil
• half of that "pink apple"
• green drink - kale, spinach, apple, lemon
• celery with raw almond butter
• cherry tomatoes
• salad - baby kale, spinach, chard, micro-greens w/ olive oil and nutritional yeast
• strawberries
• more coffee
• water

Veggie Burger or Green Biscuit Hockey Puck?

I found these vegan Dr. Praeger's California Veggie Burgers at Trader Joe's. They are not pretty in the photo on the box. ("New look, same great taste!" Wow. What was the old look?) They are even homelier after they're cooked. Think moss covered drink coaster. The taste though, is pretty all right. There's nothing burger-y about them but they do have a pleasant vegetable-y taste. Definitely worth a try.

What I ate today:

• 1 avocado
• 1 handful Brazil nuts
• coffee
• salad w/ romaine, tomatoes, olives, onion, green pepper, vinaigrette
• iced tea
• apple
• sunflower seed butter
• roasted tomatoes, zucchini, kale, beets, carrots, onion

Not So Much

Vegan Tikka Masala from Trader Joe's. I knew this had too many ingredients to really be that healthy, but I thought it would be worth a try. It was not. I had pictured the mounds of chicken replacement stuff to be tofu. I was wrong. It was textured vegetable protein, or TVP. Little, round, rubbery, fake meatball things that I am not a fan of. My review? The VTM with TVP was YUCKY. I gave it up and steamed an artichoke instead and that's how lunch was saved.

Jury Duty Salad

I'm on jury duty this week. This puts me within two blocks of lots of downtown Pasadena restaurants. One of my favorites is a little bakery on Colorado called Europane. I have had their beet salad twice already in the past few days. Europane is known for their phenomenal egg salad sandwiches, which are fantastic, but since I'm not egg-ing anymore - beet salad it was. And it was good.

What I Ate Today:

• 2 bananas
• 1 avocado w/ Himalayan pink salt
• Europane beet salad - mixed greens, beets, oranges, walnuts, balsamic vinaigrette
• coffee
• steamed artichoke
• steamed asparagus
• Tuscan kale salad w/ raw almonds, olive oil, and nutritional yeast
• Trader Joe's Yellow cold pressed juice w/ pineapple, yellow bell pepper, apple, cucumbers, lime, mint

Welcome Here, or Welcome Back

Hi Everyone. If you're new here to My Raw Blog, you can expect updates about what I eat, new products I try, and sometimes a video post about it all. I eat primarily raw-vegan, meaning raw fruits and vegetables and nuts and seeds. Every once in awhile I throw in some other good vegan cooked stuff to mix it up. You can also find me at my family humor blog www.smacksy.com  Thanks for dropping in.

What I ate today:

• Coffee
• Raw cashews
• 1 avocado w/ Himalayan Pink Salt
• 1 cup of raspberries
• 1 warm bowl of leek, fennel, potato soup - made from scratch by my husband. Not raw, but oh so good.
• more coffee
• lots of water w/ lemon
• For dinner I'm at a restaurant called Tender Greens, my go-to there is a cold salad called The Happy Vegan: wheat w/ cranberry, quinoa with cucumber and beets, green hummus, tabbouleh, mixed greens and hazelnuts

Wow.

Not gonna go into what I ate today, just know I didn't eat anything from the Carl's Junior that has this sign in the window:

WARNING Chemicals known to The State of California to cause cancer, or birth defects or other reproductive harm may be present in foods or beverages sold here.

And I hope you didn't eat anything from there either.

You guys? I'll share my organic apple with you.
(WARNING: It is known to keep the doctor away.)

Lunch at Sun Cafe

Today I met a friend for lunch at Sun Cafe in Studio City. This place is organic and vegan and has some raw stuff on the menu. We both ordered the Raw Fiesta Burger - a seasoned patty topped with guacamole, pico de gallo, nacho "cheese, " cashew mayo, and jalepenos. I ordered it served on a raw "bun." The bun was a chewy, raw cracker that broke into pieces once I bit into it. That part wasn't great. If I ordered it again, I'd chose the other option and get it wrapped in a lettuce leaf. The burger part was good and held together in a way that most veggie burgers don't. With all the stuff on it, it was heavy and a bit rich.

Dessert was a raw lemon and blueberry cheesecake. It tasted strongly of coconut oil, as these things generally do, but it was good.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• raw oatmeal w/ maple syrup
• orange
• Raw Fiesta Burger
• green salad - arugula, lemon basil dressing
• green drink -  kale, celery, cucumber, spinach, apple
• banana
• steamed spinach with olive oil and garlic
• carrots
• kale salad

Biting

I'd had a toothache for a few days before I finally got into the dentist on Tuesday. Apparently I have a tooth with a previous root canal that has become reinfected. I'm on antibiotics now which is helping to take away the pain and sensitivity to cold. The last few days of eating were the same thing over and over. Lots of soft stuff - bananas, avocados, and coconut milk yogurt.

Today I was finally ready for some non-soft food. I picked up a tempeh BLT at a cafe in the neighborhood. If you're not familiar, tempeh is a soy product, not unlike tofu, but with a more firm texture. It does not taste at all like bacon but it's good, in its way.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• 1/2 cup raw cashews
• 1 kiwi
• green drink - kale, cucumber, spinach, apple, lemon (Grassroots)
• tempeh BLT - tempeh bacon, lettuce, tomato, bread, veganaise (Fiore Market Cafe)
• 1 banana
• lightly sauteed tatsoi greens, red chard, tomatoes, and garbanzos w/ olive oil
• 1 orange

The Day After the Thing

The Prevention photo crew was terrific. (My kitchen and I have never looked so glamorous together!) Having a team of pros to make you up, dress you fancy, and light you in a flattering fashion is something I could get used to. But, they are gone now so it's just me and my kale hanging out together. Sigh.

Have you seen red spinach before? I picked some up at Trader Joe's. It tastes like green spinach but is a deep berry color. Fun to try for something different.

What I ate today:

• handful cashews
• 2 bananas
• coffee, you bet
• kale, red spinach, radicchio, green onion, pecan, dried cranberry salad w/ vinaigrette
• Satsuma mandarin orange - so good right now, you guys
• avocado w/ lemon, Himalayan pink salt
• vegetable red curry - cauliflower, tomatoes, potatoes, peas w/brown rice

Making It Happen

The photo above is evidence of some amazing grilled baby eggplant I had last week at my friend Jennifer's place. If you ever get the chance for Jennifer to make these for you, you should totally eat them.

I'm still here in Raw-V Land. Perhaps the holiday season brought a little less Raw and a little more V. Perhaps I'm feeling a tad squishy and off. Perhaps. One thing's for sure, the fastest way I know to get back on track is the knowledge that Prevention Magazine is coming to my house in four days to take pictures of my Raw-V self. The article about transformational clean eating will be out in a few months. I'll let you know when that happens.

Meanwhile, hello bananas. Howdy, avocados. Oh my glorious green drink, how I've missed you.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• 2 bananas
• 1/2 cup of Brazil nuts
• 1 avocado
• green drink - kale, spinach, cucumber, apple, lemon (Grassroots)
• mixed greens w/vinaigrette (Nicole's)
• cold lentils  (Nicole's)
• hearts of palm, artichoke hearts, tomatoes salad  (Nicole's)
• green salad - tomatoes, avocado, mixed greens, baby kale, slivered almonds, ginger vinaigrette
