Must We Call It Pizza?

I tried a slice of raw "pizza" today. It's in the shape of a slice of pizza, but the similarities end there. You can not pick this up and eat it with your hands,  it's far to moist for that and falls apart. It's really fork food. There are fresh tomatoes, no sauce, and a nut cheese that tasted just like... nut cheese. The crust was nondescript. Even after my stellar review,  I still ate the whole thing because it was raw and it was something a little different.

What I ate today:

• banana
• coffee
• Back to Life Raw Cheeze-y Pizza, flax, soaked sunflower seeds, soaked cashews, tomato, onion, celery, basil, parsley, garlic, olives, olive oil, lemon, turmeric, paprika, cayenne, black pepper, sea salt (Grassroots)
• green drink - kale, spinach, cucumber, apple, lemon, ginger (Grassroots)
• green salad - mixed greens, avocado, tomatoes, walnut parm, olive oil
• Rahel Atar - Ethiopian yellow peas, injera, spices

Luscious and Liberated Again

One of my friends gave me this cookbook. It looks interesting. I'll let you know what I find.

I forgot to mention yesterday that I tried some of the raw "parmesan" that Trina made. I had it on a salad with olive oil and it was so super good, I had it again tonight.

I had lunch with Karen today at Cafe Gratitude. Not surprisingly, we both got what we always get, the kelp noodles and the chocolatey smoothie with a coffee shot. High five.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• handful Brazil nuts
Liberated - Marinated kelp noodles, heirloom cherry tomatoes, local black and green olives, wild arugula, basil hempseed pesto, cashew ricotta, Brazil nut parmesan, avocado (Cafe Gratitude)
• Luscious - (Smoothie) Almond milk, figs, dates, raw cacao, vanilla bean, coffee Cafe Gratitude
• green salad - mixed greens, baby kale, tomatoes, almonds, olive oil, Trina's magic raw parm
• cup of strawberries/raspberries

Happy New Year Honey, Honey

Minutiae: I drove through Starbucks today and got a soy milk latte. Had about half and then my stomach started hurting, so I abandoned it. Maybe the espresso was a little rough for my delicate system. *curtsey*

We're in the middle of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Apples with honey are a traditional Rosh Hashanah food that signifies hope that God will judge our last year kindly and look down on us with sweetness. And they are raw. And depending where you stand on the great honey debate, it is also maybe, sort of, might be vegan. Or not. It's tricky. Nevertheless, Happy New Year.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• handful Brazil nuts
• Trader Joe's Coconut Water
• carrots w/ Lick Peppercorn Cashew Spread
• cup of strawberries
• part of a soy latte
• apples w/ honey
• green salad - mixed lettuce, baby kale, micro greens, tomatoes, avocado, olive oil, Bragg's Nutritional Yeast Seasoning
• red grapes

• handful Brazil nuts, raisins
• banana
• corn tostada shells w/pico de gallo

Muchas Tostadas

We used to have the classic "Taco Tuesdays" at our house. That morphed into "Tostada Tuesdays." I had a different plan for tonight, but my son is requesting "Tostada Monday" so that's what we're doing. It's not an interesting story, but it is a true one.

What I ate today:

• banana
• handful of Brazil nuts
• green drink - kale, spinach, cucumber, apple. lemon (Grassroots)
• carrots w/ Lick Raw Peppercorn Cashew Spread
• 1/2 cup raisins
• baby kale salad w/ avocado, almonds, ginger dressing
• 3 tostadas, corn tortillas, cabbage, avocado, tomatoes, black beans, pico de gallo

We're headed to a fundraising party for Bob's school tonight. I don't know what the food situation will be, and to avoid the very likely risk of standing around eating baby carrots all night, I'm eating before we go. The party should be fun. Parents that I like very much, dressed up in going out clothes throwing cash at a silent auction after hanging out at an open bar. I'm volunteering at the event which is great for me because large parties can often freak me out in an oh-my-God-why-am-I-here-I-forgot-I-was-an-introvert sort of way and helping out will give me something to do. All good.

What I ate today (so far):

• coffee
• brown rice with rice milk and blueberries
• coconut water (Trader Joe's)
• handful Brazil nuts
• 6 Olivos del Mar organic green olives
• 2 vegan oatmeal chocolate chip cookies (Trader Joe's)
• Raw Bowl - kale and assorted cashew cheeses (Kind Kreme)
• green juice - kale, celery, cucumber, lemon

The Perks of Being Friends With an Amazing Vegan Cook

My friend Trina is an amazing vegan cook and baker.  She blogs about it over at YourVeganMom.com. Today she kindly brought me two raw cookie things - one fig and walnut, one plum and almond - and some lovely raw walnut "parmesan." The cookies are dense and delightful. She wrote on the cookie packages "made for coffee" and naturally I just happened to be drinking some coffee when she dropped them off so I ate both of them immediately. SO GOOD. I managed to get a picture of one of them before demolishing it. Looking forward to trying out the walnut parm, maybe tomorrow.

What I ate today:
• coffee
• steel cut oats soaked overnight in almond milk w/ blueberries
• a million carrots w/ a helluva lot of raw olive hummus
• 2 Trina cookies
• mixed vegetables w/brown rice (Charm Vegan)
• Thai tea

About Last Weekend

I was in Santa Barbara last weekend for my birthday. Santa Barbara has a number of vegan/vegetarian-friendly restaurants because it's Santa Barbara and of course it does.

On Saturday night we ate at Mesa Verde, a mostly vegan place that opened a few months ago.  The food was great. We ordered too much of it, but ate it all. We got the roasted brussel sprouts with jackfruit "chorizo," black bean street tacos, blue lake green beans with heirloom tomatoes, fez seven vegetable tagine, roasted vegetables with couscous, a Margherita flatbread for the boy, and some dessert that I don't remember what it was but I remember liking it. Everything was great.

I ordered a rooibos iced tea and found out that I am quite allergic to rooibos. I popped a couple of Benadryl and was good to go. I find that it's so much easier to eat when your throat isn't swelled shut. (Pro-tip)

It was a fine birthday. Hello Fifty.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• 6 kiwi berries
• carrots w/ Back To Life Raw Kalamata Hummus (Grassroots)
• salad - mixed greens, baby kale, avocado, almonds, olive oil, Bragg's Nutritional Yeast Seasoning
• Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey Drink (Grassroots)
• 3 figs
• lightly sauteed chard, garlic, red and yellow peppers, garbanzo beans, mushrooms, olive oil, 1/2 cup brown rice

Still Here, Still Raw Vegan

I'm great, thanks. How are you? I know, it's been awhile. So, I've been doing the raw/v for 5-1/2 months now and it has become second nature. I'm an expert at scanning menus for food that will work for me. Shopping is easy. I have my favorites and go-tos. I still have not sprung for a juicer, Cuisinart, or dehydrator and at this point, I'm thinking I probably won't. (We have a teensy kitchen with extra-teensy counter space and I'd rather not fill it with appliances.) I won't say it's all been effortless, but it's going well and it's working for me.

Kiwi berries came in our organic box this week. They're like little olive sized kiwis but without the hairy exterior. Super good.

What I ate today:

• 2 bananas
• 3 dates
• carrots
• Hungarian Paprika Lick Cashew Spread (Grassroots)
• Trader Joe's Cold Pressed Yellow Juice
• lightly sauteed green beans w/ olive oil and Himalayan pink salt
• 3 vegetarian tostadas - corn tortilla, pintos, cabbage, tomato, pico de gallo
• 6 kiwi berries
