It May Have Been 4 Bananas

Cruising through the day. Then 4:00pm hit with a blinding headache. Wasn't sure where dinner was going to come from, but I knew I wasn't making it. Mr. Rosenberg stopped at Bristol Farms on the way home and picked up some stuff. I have a million exciting stories just like this one!

What I ate today:

• some kind of vegan indian food from Amy's Organics - don't know what it was. Not paying attention because headache.

The Run Around

It was a running around kind of day. An eat on the run, kind of day. The kind of day where you end up doing all of your eating standing up by the kitchen sink. (The running around was only interrupted by standstill traffic on the 10.)

Yesterday: A Detour

So... yesterday. It was my friend Jennifer's birthday and a group of us met for dim sum in Rosemead. Trying to stay vegan at dim sum is a challenge and raw is not an option but I made the vegan part happen. There was some sauteed spinach-y broccoli-ish vegetable, a tofu thing, and something called "fungus pocket." It was great. And then there was birthday cake. Beautiful, sweet and delicious, non-vegan birthday cake. I had a piece and managed not to go down in flames. I felt fine afterward.

At dinner I found myself at Antigua in Highland Park. I had to decide whether I was getting the side salad or a vegetable sandwich. I chose the veg sandwich. With fries. No raw yesterday.

Today I'm back.

The Goal Is 12.5

This is where the magic happens. Droopy hydrangeas and all.

Today I went back to City of Hope to try and give blood platelets after spending the last few days trying to get my iron up so that I can be an eligible candidate. Find out what happened HERE or watch the video below.

Lunch was at old favorite, Lemonade. They have little symbols on the menu so that you're able to tell which food is nut free, lactose free, gluten free, vegetarian, or vegan. (We're a high maintenance people, here in Southern California.)

That's A Lot Of Bran, People

Guys. I'm still going strong with the iron so I'll be ready for my platelet donation appointment on Saturday. Now that I've been enjoying all too much All Bran, I just read that there is more iron in Product 19 or Total than All Bran. Is Product 19 even still a thing anymore? I guess I need to go back to the store.

I have had a lot of beet juice. I have had spinach and kale. I have had copious amounts of Cream of Wheat. So today's "What I Ate" looks a little different than usual since I'm still working on the iron situation. I really don't have a secret thing for Cream of Wheat that I've been keeping from you. I swear.

Today I went to donate some blood platelets for a friend who's in the hospital. I've donated before, but today, even though my iron count was normal, it wasn't high enough for me to donate. I was sent home with instructions on how to raise my iron levels and a new appointment set for Saturday morning.

I went shopping for a bunch of iron rich foods and I guess I have a pretty clear idea of what I'll be eating for the next few days. I'll be able to stay vegan, mostly raw, except for some enriched cereals that I'll have with rice milk.

What I ate today:

• cream of wheat
• gigantic apple/beet juice (Grassroots)

Yes, Please

This morning the guys ran in a 5k and I went along for moral support. We slept in so I didn't eat anything until we went out for lunch after the race. I ordered vegetarian tacos at Le Grande Orange and they were terrific.

Dinner was my favorite veggie burger in the neighborhood.

It was a great day for eating stuff. If I think about it too much I'll get hungry all over again.

The Book I Did Not Do And The Food I Did

I had some Brad's Raw Crunchy Kale today. Not for me. Or you. Probably.

I went to one of my book clubs last night and we had some terrific Greek food from Pita Pita in Pasadena. So some cooked vegan and some raw today. (I lamed out and didn't read the book this month but everyone loved it. A House In The Sky by Amanda Lindhout and Sara Corbett) Just eating and hanging out with the ladies was fun.

Um... The Figs Were Good?

I had some of that Living Lasagna for the first time in a long time. It really helped to remind me how much better the raw lasagna is at Cafe Gratitude.

At dinner, I tried a different type of Ethiopian food. I really like the yellow pea version, this was the kale version. I teach my son not to spit out food he doesn't like and say, "Blech. I hate it!" I'd rather hear, "It's not my favorite." My verdict on the Kale/Gomen? Yeah. It's not my favorite.

Three Words: Legoland Salad Bar

It wasn't good, man. When I was paying for our lunches, the cashier looked down at my sad salad plate and encouraged me to go back and get more. "It costs the same no matter how much you get." More wouldn't have made it better.

I was feeling sunburned and road-weary by the time we returned from a good day at Legoland. We ordered in Thai food.

We went to dinner at a new ramen place by the house. Everything was good but oh, man - these brussels sprouts were crazy great. I can totally see myself getting a couple of orders of these to go as a regular thing.

Next, I'm headed back to try and eat raw at Legoland again. (I may never learn.)

Trains and Tostadas

Lunch was at Whole Foods today. I got stuff from one of the 40 salad bars.

Tonight we were with a group of friends and all of our kids. We took the train to downtown LA to see a free concert in the park and then we weren't allowed in because our bags were larger than 10"x10" - WhatEVER. We all loaded back on to the train, got off at Union Station and walked over to Olvera Street. We ended up in a Mexican Restaurant which was pretty good and super loud, so it was perfect for our crew of ten.

Um... Oopsie

I went to breakfast with a group of girlfriends this morning. We were having so much fun and laughing so loud, we actually got shushed by the people at another table. Shushed! What? Too much joy! Enough with the joy! Asshats.

Meanwhile I had my old coffee shop breakfast standby - oatmeal.

Then I made the large mistake of running around all day and letting myself get too hungry. I picked up dinner from Gus's BBQ for the family and I got a veggie burger for myself. It was delicious but I ate it a lot too fast. After I was done and starting to feel sort of crappy, I realized that it had cheese on it. I don't eat cheese. Sneaky dairy. Oops. Those sweet potato fries probably didn't help my cause much either. I'm going to need a large green drink ASAP.

Lots Of Goodness

Went to lunch with Karen Cafe Gratitude. Favorite meal. No complaints there either.

I made it back over to Kind Kreme today. It was time. I needed one of their fancy kale bowls. I've been trying to sort of replicate one at home and it's just not the same. It was so big I couldn't finish it. And that's how they getcha.

Enough With The Barking

Today we had some work being done on the front of the house, so in order to keep Teddy from barking non-stop for 6 hours, I brought him into the bedroom and I sat in bed with him all day, while I hung out on the internet. What I do for this family. Jeez.

3 Restaurants And A Vlog

I ate out all three meals today.

Breakfast was at Lemonade - it was sort of an early lunch. I had a black lentil cold salad thing with some other stuff in it that was vegan.

Lunch # 2 was at Saladang Thai. I had a vegetable curry.

Dinner was at Taylor's Steak House. I did not have steak.

Many people have asked if I also stepped up my exercise when I went raw vegan. I vlogged my answer.

What I Ate Besides Popcorn On What We'll Now Call Popcorn Friday

No, I didn't eat these red grapes today, I chose instead to eat a pound of popcorn. Good times.

The giant bag of popcorn I powered down made eating anything else not so appealing. That popcorn situation will teach me not to grocery shop on a somewhat empty stomach. (Like I didn't already know that.)

Not So Much

Shishito peppers showed up in the organic box yesterday. I've heard the way to eat them is sauteed in some olive oil and a little sea salt. Sounds good.

This was another odd day. I know, I didn't eat much but don't worry, I'm far from wasting away. I had a regular breakfast then all kinds of busy good hell broke lose and all of a sudden it was dinner time and lunch hadn't happened. At 6:00pm I went for a vegetable tray and another popsicle. (Hot day.)
