Breaking: The Results Are IN

In my fun doctor's office gown.

Guys. As you may recall, one of the reasons I started the raw/v was that I had high cholesterol. Before I started the raw/v a little over three months ago, my cholesterol was 241. I had it tested a week ago and got the results back today. My current cholesterol is 181. That's right. I brought it down 60 points in three months. High five.

I was a little low on vitamin D and B12. I got an Rx for the D and a shot in the behind of B12.

When I told the doctor about my new way of eating, I was surprised that his first question was not about where did I get my protein  - but rather - how much weight did you lose? (My doc, Dr. H, is the doctor on The Biggest Loser, so of course that was his first question.) My answer: 25 pounds so far. And then his second question was, how am I getting my protein. (Apparently this question in response to hearing that someone is eating raw/vegan is encoded in all human DNA.) I told him I'm getting it from eating a big-ass ton of vegetables. He was satisfied with that. I am too.

So no statins for me. Just a helluva lot of kale.

Brunched Up

Today I went to Malibu to have brunch with my friends Yolanda, Jennifer, and Karen to celebrate Yolanda's birthday. We went to a place called Geoffrey's that overlooks the water and it was lovely. For my appetizer, I had a golden beet salad that I raw-ed up by having them omit the goat cheese. As my main course, I had the one vegan thing they had on the menu - a tofu deal with vegetables in a ginger sauce. It was like two big blocks of vegan. It was okay but the company was outstanding.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• 2 bananas
• golden beet salad (Geoffrey's)
• braised tofu w/ kale, zucchini, carrots  - vegan not raw (Geoffrey's)
• raw bowl - kale, cabbage, carrots, almonds, cashew cheese (Kind Kreme)
• iced tea
• green apple

The House Has Been Warmed

Today was a little crazy. We had our housewarming party. The first half of the day was spent running around getting ready. Got too busy for lunch. After the party, I had one of the vegan sandwiches we had catered from Real Food Daily. The vegan stuff all moved at the party. People either liked it or were being very polite and saying they liked it. It was mostly all gone.

What I ate today:

• banana
• coffee
• Brazil nuts
• green drink - kale, spinach, grapefruit, lemon (Kind Kreme)
• vegan club sandwich - tempeh, vegan bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, bread - vegan not raw - (Real Food Daily)
• pineapple juice

Something Else I Tried So You Don't Have To

Wow. Margeaux and Linda's Vegan Kitchen Perfectly Pad Thai isn't just not good, it is aggressively bad. I've had some very good vegan and even raw pad thai so I had high hopes for this stuff. Big let down. It was bitter and clumpy and there was nothing interesting in it. It was also $9.99 and that stings a little too. After a few bites, I threw it away and had an avocado instead. This is not a paid review, just me telling you - don't do it.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• plum
• nectarine
• Brazil nuts
• 4 bites of the nasty pad thai
• avocado
• Bragg's Apple Cider VinegarAll Natural Drink
• yellow curry w/tofu and brown rice - vegan not raw
• mango sticky rice
• Thai tea
• banana

Party Planning

No, I didn't eat carrots today but, you know, it's a vegetable and everything, so the photo.

Saturday we are having a housewarming party. So far, more than 70 people have RSVPd. We will somehow be jamming them all into our 864 sq. ft house. I ordered catering from a vegan restaurant called Real Food Daily. I'm only a tiny bit nervous about this. Hopefully there will not be a must-have-meat mutiny from our guests. *fingers crossed*

What I ate today:

• banana
• coffee
• green salad - romaine, onions, bell peppers, avocado, tomatoes, salsa dressing
• brazil nuts
• green drink - kale, spinach, cucumber, apple, lemon
• Ethiopian red lentil and injera wrap thing that I don't remember the name of and I threw the box away - vegan not raw (Grassroots)
• plum

I Can't Even

You guys? My friend sent me this picture taken in the produce department at the super market. Not only do these apples have an ingredients list, it's an ingredients list that includes "apples" but also "natural and artificial grape flavors." Now they're even making our healthy foods unhealthy. A Grapple a day keeps the health food away.

What previously-known-as healthy foods have you seen around that have been messed with?

What I ate today:

• banana
• green grapes
• coffee
• cold salad trio - cold lentils, hearts of palm, artichoke, tomato, ratatouille - vegan not raw (French Cafe near our place)
• apple
• cashew butter
• green salad - baby greens, red and green swiss chard, tat soi, arugula, spinach, pea shoots, avocado,
zucchini, yellow squash, pecans, ginger dressing
• dark chocolate - 87% cacao

Simple

I'm back in the rhythm of being home. Today looked like a regular, simple food day for me and I'm feeling better already. I've got a couple of trips coming up in July and I'm going to try and be a bit more prepared. I don't know what that means yet, I will have to give it some thought. Perhaps a more strategic grocery store visit to a local market on the road...

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• salad - romaine, radishes, red grapes, raisins, avocado, citrus vinaigrette (This is the chicken salad from the coffee shop where I substitute avocado for chicken.)
• iced tea
• green salad - baby greens, red and green swiss chard, tat soi, arugula, spinach, pea shoots, avocado, almonds, ginger dressing
• apple
• almond butter

Land of a Thousand (or 3) Artichokes

We're back home from a few days on Catalina Island. It's not that the island isn't raw/vegan friendly - there is a Von's and the produce looked pretty good, but if you're interested in going to restaurants it's extremely limited. Like cup of fruit/side salad are your only options, limited. I decided to go vegan, hold the raw, and do the best that I could. I spent one evening last week reading all of the Catalina restaurants' menus online. I had a strategy.

I got a bunch of bananas, some air popped popcorn, and a few Lara bars at the market to keep in the room.

The first night we went to a Steak House. Yeah, I know, but they have a vegetable platter listed on the menu. I ordered a steamed artichoke appetizer and the veg plate. It was a lovely steamed artichoke. Then my entree came - the main feature of the veg plate? Another steamed artichoke. This is something our server failed to mention so two artichokes it was.

Mr. Rosenberg ordered a piece of mudpie for dessert to celebrate his birthday. I guess we could have jammed a birthday candle into another steamed artichoke but he went for the pie. I decided to join in and take a bite and then I had another and another. Before the check even came, I realized what a huge mistake I had made. All that sugar and all that dairy took me down fast. My system was not used to it. It was not good. I'm trying to keep it real folks, but let me just say I had digestive issues and leave it at that. See? There's something else I tried so you don't have to.

For breakfast we went to a pancake place that has oatmeal on the menu so that was my plan. By the time we got there, they were already out of it. Side of fruit for me. Do I even have to mention that I also had coffee because obvs.

Lunch was at a fish place. The closest thing to a vegetable they had on the menu was coleslaw swimming in mayonnaise. I went for the veggie burger and had some fries with that. Fries. Who am I?

Dinner was at a fancier fish place. I got the, yes- you guessed it, grilled artichoke for an appetizer because that's what they had. I then ordered a chopped shrimp salad without the shrimp, add avocado. This wasn't bad. Mixed greens with grilled vegetables, avocado, and some kind of goddess-like dressing. This place had mud pie on their dessert menu. I had a cup of coffee instead.

Breakfast the next day was a Lara bar and a banana.

Today I had been back at home about 30 seconds, when I called Kind Kreme and ordered a couple of Raw Bowls and Alkalizer green drinks to go. I have never been so happy to see raw kale and a drink that tastes like lawn. Raw! I'm back! I missed you so!

Hungry Vegans On the Road

We are headed out of town this weekend to celebrate Mr. Rosenberg's birthday. (Would-be vegan robbers, we have a burly house-sitter and an incredibly ridiculous security system, so don't even.) Did I tell you that Mr. R is going for it and vegan-ing too? He is. I will not be reporting from the road but I will check in on Monday and let you know what it was like doing raw/v on an island.

Until then, remember: When in doubt, eat a leafy green thing.

So Many Vegetables

Dinner was at Lemonade. I had a very happy plate.

• green drink - kale, apple, cucumber, grapefruit, ginger (Kind Kreme)

Yes, A Sammich

Today my son and I were getting stir-crazy so we headed to Trails Cafe in Griffith Park for lunch. Trails is tiny. It's very forrest-y and eating is at picnic tables outside. They have a very small but good menu. I went vegan, not raw for my lunch and actually had bread for the first time in three months.

Dinner we went to the coffee shop by the house and I did my special order of a chicken salad without the chicken, add extra avocado. Was good, it was.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• nectarine
• avocado sandwich - vegan, not raw  - avocado, tomato, sprouts, red onion, vegan "bacon bits," whole wheat bread
• Palapa Azul Golden Sunrise Frozen Bar
• green salad - romaine, raisins, grapes, almonds, avocado w/citrus vinaigrette
• iced tea

Good Morning, Spicy

I did that dangerous thing today of food shopping while extremely hungry. I got the four items I went to the store for plus some overpriced vegan snack stuff. This is how I ended up eating weird things for breakfast. The curry flavor kale ships are really good. The bag says it contains two servings but if you say you are able to only eat part of the bag in one sitting, I won't believe you. P.S. I have enough kale in my house to make these myself but, you know, laziness. The falafel spice crunchy chickpeas were terrific too.

What I ate today:

• Rhythm Super Foods Kale Chips, Bombay Curry (Bristol Farms)
• Saffron Road Falafel Crunchy Chickpeas (Bristol Farms)
• coffee
• nectarine
• plum
• banana
• green salad - mixed greens, fresh corn, carrots, radishes, avocado, pea sprouts w/ raw hummus and Lick Garlic Cashew Spread (Grassroots)

Things With Things

Today, my friend Anna took me to a place in the valley called Daichan for lunch. It bills itself as "Japanese Soul Food." I got a thing that had a lot of things on it, many of them I could not identify. All of it, I was assured, was vegetarian. It was really good.

What I ate today:

• Vegetarian Sushi Bowl - lotus root, gobo, white radish, cucumber, tofu, konnyaku yam cake, carrot, edamame, kobu and wakame seaweed, served with shiso plum vinegar brown sushi rice (Daichan)
• hot tea
• green juice - kale, spinach, apple (Grass Roots)
• Two Moms In The Raw Tomato Basil Crackers (Whole Foods)
• guacamole (Whole Foods)
• raw hummus (Grassroots)
• raw falafel (Grassroots)
• banana

Getting Well Soon

Still in recovery mode with this ridiculous cough. Took the day off from regular life to just sit around and try and get well today. I may have had more than a couple of popsicles and written it off as adding to my "fluids" part of the "rest and fluids" thing I'm supposed to be doing. Frozen fluids, but still.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• 2 bananas
• brown rice with almond milk and blueberries (vegan, not raw)
• 3 (yes 3) Palapa Azul Frozen Coconut Bars (Bristol Farms)
• green salad - mixed greens, spinach, radishes, pea shoots, avocado, almonds, ginger dressing
• Palapa Azul Frozen Watermelon Bar (Bristol Farms)
• carrots w/spicy avocado hummus
• handful of pecans
• grilled vegetables - green beans, cauliflower, yellow squash (Tender Greens)
• green salad - mixed greens, vinaigrette

I Ate A Rainbow

A few years ago, in a kid's nutrition class I took at Bob's school, the instructor told us to tell the kids to "Eat the rainbow." They were to keep track of how many different colors of fruits and vegetables they ate during the day and see if they could make a rainbow out of it.  Today was a big fat rainbow.

We went for brunch today to a place in Culver City called Cafe Vida. They had a lot of vegan options. I got the Organic Vegetable Bowl. Excellent. Also a green juice. Lovely. It was a lot of food.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• green juice - kale, spinach, parsley, celery, green apple
• Organic Vegetable Bowl - cauliflower, broccoli, sun-dried tomato, carrot, zucchini, yellow squash, avocado, tofu w/quinoa (Cafe Vida)
• Palapa Azul Watermelon Frozen Bar (Bristol Farms)
• green salad - red lettuce, baby kale, pea shoots, radishes, avocado, almonds, ginger dressing
• yellow vegetable curry w/brown rice (left-over from last night)

That's Right, Chocolate

Let's talk about this dark chocolate with sea salt. No, it isn't raw, but it is vegan. And it's chocolate. With sea salt. When I'm in the market for dark chocolate, (When am I not?) I try to find the highest percentage dark chocolate possible which is usually somewhere in the 80%, where I shop. But those 80% bars didn't have the sea salt. So, here it is. And it is good.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• 64% Dark Chocolate with Sea Salt (Bristol Farms)
• Palapa Azul Frozen Coconut Bar (Bristol Farms)
• raw bowl - kale, marinated cabbage, carrots, almonds, flax seeds and lots of cashew cream stuff (Kind Kreme)
• green drink - kale, spinach, lemon
• lemonade - I had some that I bought from my son's lemonade stand because, obviously.
• yellow vegetable curry - zucchini, onion, peppers, potato, carrots (Thai vegan restaurant)
• brown rice  (Thai vegan restaurant)
• Thai tea  (Thai vegan restaurant)
• mango sticky rice (Thai vegan restaurant)

Bronchitis and Baby Kale

The bronchitis report: gradual improvement, still coughing, throat not as sore, appetite coming back. Yay.

I belong to two book clubs. Tonight I met with one of them. (This month we read Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. I gave it a B. Thanks for asking.) When we get together we all do a little potluck-y business so I brought something I knew at least I would eat but I wasn't so sure it would appeal to everyone else. I made a baby kale salad with stuff in it and an asian dressing I bought at Bristol Farms. It was actually gone by the end of the evening. I think the trick was that I used baby kale which has sort of a spinach quality to it and isn't as serious as grown up kale.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• necatarine
• peach
• banana
• Leaf Raw Vegan "Lasagne" - the squash thing I've had before (natural food store)
• green drink - kale, spinach, apple, ginger (natural food store)
• apple w/almond butter
• salad - baby kale, radishes, avocado, orange, almonds, ginger dressing
• green grapes
• raspberries

Move Along, Not Much To See Here

Guys. This bronchitis is nasty. It's messing with my appetite and my swallowing. So... it's a tiny boring list of stuff I ate today. The salad I had at lunch was from a coffee shop. It usually has chicken on it but I substituted avocado. The salad I had for dinner was from another place and there was a bushel of kale in it. I couldn't finish it all. (Does kale come by the bushel? Maybe a bale? A kale bale? I think I've had too much cough medicine.)

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• salad - romaine, red grapes, almonds, raisins, radishes, avocado
• iced tea
• salad - kale, tomato, pecans, avocado, cucumber (I picked off the red onion this time)

Coughing Is The New Black

Contents of The Box

Oh, man. The list of what I ate today is pathetic. Apparently I have bronchitis, and apparently I'm going to cough violently every time I try to eat or drink anything. Or any time I talk. Or any time I try to sleep or breathe. So, I didn't eat much today. I have no doubt that I will make up for this as soon as possible.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• Brazil nuts
• green grapes
• vegetable curry (from last night) vegan not raw
• brown rice

Slapping Things Together

Steamy curry

Today was the first grade field trip and picnic in the park. I threw a bunch of things in a bag for my lunch and it worked out quite well. I haven't gone to the store in awhile so choices are limited. This is how I pressure myself to eat radishes.

It was also time for the fridge clean out curry. The organic box arrives tomorrow. Oh, the suspense!

What I ate today:

• coffee
• 2 bananas
• Evolution Fresh Organic V Juice - carrot, apple, celery, lemon, beet, spinach, lime, parsley, ginger (Bristol Farms)
• Live Smart Cranberry Pumpkin Seed Raw Bar (natural food store)
• Go Raw Organice Sunflower Snax Crackers (natural food store)
• Lick Paprika Cashew Spread (natural food store)
• radishes
• Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar Honey Drink (natural food store)
• vegetable curry w/brown rice - eggplant, carrots, peas, onion, potato (
• cantaloupe
• plum

Nope

Yes. You see it. It's raw. It's a cracker. It's a RAWKER. Why? Why with the horrible puns, raw people? So this "rawker" had a lot of sprouted ingredients. It was very crumbly and bright Spirulina green. Even with my dampened taste buds, I could tell this wasn't great. Even dipping it in my favorite raw olive hummus couldn't mask the not greatness of this hard crunchy oval. Thumbs down on the Rawker, everyone. Stay away.

My mom visited her doctor for a checkup last week. He asked her how I was doing. She mentioned that I was doing the raw/v thing. He told her that he has 3,700 patients and only two of them are vegan, none raw. He said he thought everyone should be eating that way. (Although I think if they did, it might really cut into his business.)

Tonight I went to a sweet PTA dinner thing at a friend's house. She was very kind and made a detour from the menu plate for me of nice things that I eat. (Thanks, Gabby! *waves*) I was well taken care of.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• 2 bananas
• Rawker w/ raw hummus (natural food store)
• green juice  - kale, spinach, and apple (natural food store)
• Brazil nuts
• Palapa Azul Frozen Green Bar (Bristol Farms)
• sauteed green beans
• peach
• red grapes
• iced tea
• cough syrup - Delsym 12 Hour

Four Bananas And A Wedding

I have no idea how I ended up eating four bananas today. It just worked out that way. My taste buds aren't really working right now because of this cold/flu thing I have so eating was just about trying to not be hungry, not about taste. I napped straight through lunch.

This evening, we were at a wonderful wedding. I had the vegetarian option for dinner: Artichoke beignets. These were three steamed artichoke hearts with some kind of sauce. It was really good. I am basing my opinion on what Mr. Rosenberg reported about his dinner since, yeah, I couldn't really taste it.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• 4 bananas (I know.)
• artichoke beignets w/ carrots, green beans and potatoes (vegan not raw)
• orange juice

Simple Saturday

For those following my flu along at home: My voice is still shot but feeling better. Still coughing.

I was at a restaurant for lunch but they were still serving breakfast too so I had oatmeal. (Glamorous.)

Dinner, I was at another restaurant. I was very lucky that they had a few vegan options plus cold pressed juices. I learned that if you mix cucumber with other things in a juice, all you will taste is the cucumber. I think beets are like that too.

What I ate today:

• banana
• coffee
• earl grey tea
• oatmeal w/raisins - vegan, not raw
• mixed fruit - strawberries, pineapple, honeydew melon
• quinoa w/ tofu and roasted vegetables
• curried cauliflower
• green juice - kale, spinach, cucumber, apple
• watermelon

What I Ate And A Link

Today I was still feeling a little out of it. I wanted a green juice but not enough to go and get one. My plan was to not leave the house all afternoon and I did not. It's good to have goals.

I like what this woman has to say: Your Body Is A Machine

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• Brazil nuts
• leftover potato/carrot curry - vegan not raw
• apricot
• Back to Life Raw Vegan Falafels (natural food store)
• 1/2 avocado
• nectarine

Son of Big Matt

I have laryngitis. I feel sort of okay but have no voice whatsoever. The lady at the juice bar added ginger and lemon to my usual drink. She told me it would help my throat. The effect was not immediate. Maybe I'll notice tomorrow?

A new thing I saw at the natural food store today (and felt it necessary to try) is the Living Gourmet Ranch Avocado Falafel Burger. It has many, many ingredients and costs many, many dollars. It tasted like a pile of every raw ingredient out there. (minus kale) It wasn't bad but it wasn't special and I can't figure out where the word "ranch" fits in. It was not unlike the "Big Matt."

By the end of the day, I didn't feel great. So, I didn't eat as much as usual.

What I ate today:

• coffee, glorious coffee
• banana
• green juice - kale, spinach, apple, ginger, lemon
• Living Gourmet Ranch Avocado Raw Falafel Burger - sprouted garbanzo beans, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, avocado, chard, tomato, clover sprouts, almonds, onions, garlic, ground flax seed, basil, thyme, cilantro, parslry, dill, scallions, lemon, bell pepper, corriamder, cumin, dates cardamom, cayenne, habanero, coconut aminos, pepper, Himalayan pink salt, psyllium husk, Pristine Hydro living water
• vegetable soup - vegan not raw (Bristol Farms)

Gimme

Today was the day I went to the doctor for some blood-work to prepare for the physical I'm getting in a couple of weeks. I'm really interested to see if my cholesterol went down since I've changed the way I'm eating. It was high last time we checked. I had to fast until after my appointment, about 1:30. The first thing I did was buy a cup of copy in the lobby of the medical building. I made more when I got home.

I'm feeling a little flu-y and didn't have much of an appetite.

What I ate today:

• coffee (finally)
• apple
• banana
• avocado
• apricot
• red vegetable curry w/quinoa - potatoes, carrots
• Palaba Azul Yellow Frozen Bar

Faster Than Fast Food

This vegetable tray from Trader Joe's is my new version of fast food. Had it for dinner.

Tomorrow I am going to the doctor to get some blood work done and I have to go in fasting. That's not a problem. The problem is the part where I can't have coffee until after my 1:00pm appointment. Wish me luck.

For someone who's not that into those Palapa Azul frozen bars, I sure seem to be putting away a lot of them....

What I ate today:

• banana
• hot tea -Just kidding. Coffee.
• Palapa Azul coconut frozen bar
• handful of Brazil nuts
• apricot
• curry I made last night - eggplant, tomatoes, red onions, mushrooms (Yes, I ate the wailing mushrooms.)
• jicama
• pea pods
• cherry tomatoes
• carrots

Requiem For A Mushroom

I made another curry tonight - this one with red onion, eggplant, tomatoes, and these weird tiny mushrooms called Bunapi that come packaged as they are grown - in a clump. Once I cut them off of their stem and separated them, I put them in the pot of hot oil and onions and I swear to God, I could hear them screaming. They made a squeaky shrieking noise every time I stirred the pot. Maybe it had something to do with their texture? I don't know. All I know is that I killed the Bunapi. Now, I feel guilty for offing a mushroom. Kale better not start talking or I will have a whole different set of problems.

When it came time to eat dinner, I didn't feel so well. Maybe because of the wailing fungus but more likely from eating a metric ton of dolmas at lunch time. I played it safe and just had a little brown rice for dinner.

What I ate today:

• banana
• coffee
• salad - mixed greens, radishes, avocado, Lick Garlic and Dill Cashew Spread
• Palapa Azul Watemelon
• dolmas, so many dolmas - rice and spices wrapped in grape leaves (vegan not raw) I really don't know how many I ate. We'll just call it a big whole bunch.
• brown rice

Eat Your Vegetables

Today I had breakfast out and I went for my usual - oatmeal with fruit.

For dinner, I was also out. I had a green salad and grilled vegetables.

I have had a worry that I would eventually start getting tired of all of the vegetables and raw/v in general. I'm closing in on three months, and it hasn't happened yet. Still liking it all. Still feeling extra-good. Lost another pound this week. High five.

What I ate today:

• Coffee. So much coffee.
• banana
• nectarine
• plum
• oatmeal w/ gold raisins  - vegan not raw
• watermelon and cantaloupe
• orange juice
• salad - mixed greens, avocado, olive oil, spoonful of Lick Garlic and Dill Cashew Spread
• Palapa Azul Watermelon Bar (Bristol Farms)
• salad - mixed greens, vinigarette
• grilled vegetables - cauliflower, asparagus, carrots, mushrooms, and some kind of root vegetable that I wasn't quite sure of - vegan not raw
• handful of air-popped popcorn w/ sea salt

Party Food

Tonight we went to a fundraiser party for the school district. I had a few plates of little appetizer-y food items. There was mango sticky rice provided by the vegan Thai place by our house and it is now my new favorite thing. Dessert-like but not too sweet and I want more right now please.

I didn't have a lot of dinner but due to the tight waist of my dress, I don't think I could have packed much else in there anyway.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• 2 bananas
• nectarine
• Back to Life Raw Falafels (natural food store)
• green juice - kale, spinach, apple (natural food store)
• air popped popcorn w/ sea salt
• a tiny plate of a vegan thing with noodles and vegetables
• a plantain chip with mushroom salsa on it
• vegan mango sticky rice
• seltzer
