Really, Dr. Gupta?

I drove my neighbor to a doctor's appointment today. There was a monitor in the waiting room playing the CNN Accent Health Channel. One of the pieces was a cooking bit about how to make a "healthier cheese sauce." Healthy-er as if traditional cheese sauce is somehow healthy to begin with. The new modified cheese sauce contained butter, canola oil, salt, and white flour along with cheddar cheese. I'm still trying to figure out where the healthy comes in. After making this sauce, the chef poured it over  a large platter of (formerly healthy) steamed broccoli. I felt like I was in Bizarro Nutrition Land.

What I ate today:

• CoFfEe
• banana
• leftover Thai food from last night (It was one of those mornings.)
• radishes
• air popped pop corn w/ olive oil, sea salt
• stuffed grape leaves - brown rice, lemon juice, red peppers, tomato paste, olive oil, salt, pepper (Bristol Farms)
• Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar All Natural Honey Drink (Bristol Farms)
• Palupa Azul Frozen Watermelon Fruit Bar (Bristol Farms)

Pasta Impostor

In the name of research, I picked up this Raw Living Lasagne at the natural food store today. I didn't have high hopes because a) I'm generally disappointed in things that are raw versions of non-raw things, and b) it's made by the same company that makes the very average mango "bread." (Oh, the things I do for you people.) I did however give them points for not calling it "Raw-sagne."

The "noodle" part is raw, thinly sliced yellow squash. Then there was a lot of nut paste/cheese stuff going on and then a pretty good marinara sauce. Overall not bad for a pasta impostor.

Bob's friend Desmond was over after school, and his whole family is vegan. Desmond stayed with us for dinner so  - I picked up stuff for us from the Vegan Thai place by our house. Always a winner.

What I ate today:

• banana
• coffee
• spoonful of almond butter
• small avocado
• Leaf Living Lasagne - yellow squash, tomatoes, cashews, almonds, brazil nuts, sun-dried tomato, olive oil, garlic, onion, lemon, jicama, walnuts, parsley, sea salt, basil, oregano
• green juice - kale, spinach, apple (natural food store)
• cold pressed coffee shake with vegan honey nut ice cream and almond milk (Kind Kreme)
• red curry - bamboo shoots, tofu, peppers, green beans, onions, brown rice -vegan not raw (Charm Vegan)

Lots

It was organic box day and as always, I felt compelled to use up anything left from last week's box. This is the only explanation I have for the insane amount of broccoli I had for dinner. If you are wondering, "insane amount" is an actual unit of measure that exists between "a ton" and "an ass-load."

I found this video interesting: The amount of fruits and vegetables eaten, by state.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• Back To Life Raw Vegan Falafel (natural food store)
• Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar All Natural Drink (Bristol Farms)
• green grapes
• steamed broccoli
• salad - butter lettuce, avocado, sprouted sunflower seeds, olive oil, Lick Garlic Dill Cashew Spread
• popsicle - Palapa Azul Fruit and Veggie Bar (Bristol Farms)

Things We Tried

I ate the last of the Leaf mango bread this morning. Those Leaf people have some balls calling this "bread," but it was an okay vehicle with which to move almond butter into my mouth. However, I will not be purchasing this again. I know there's better stuff out there.

My son was with me when I went to the raw juice bar today. I got my usual combo: kale. spinach, and apple. He asked for all apple. When he tasted his, he said that it tasted too much like kale to him, maybe because they made his after mine, so I saved his for myself. Even if he doesn't like raw kale, at least he will eat the kale chips that I bake for him at home. That's something.

Dinner was at an old school coffee shop. I had one of their salads that usually comes with chicken and asked to substitute avocado. They kindly obliged.

What I ate today:

• COFFEE
• banana
• 2 pieces Leaf Mango "Bread" (natural food store)
• almond butter
• vegetable curry - tomatoes, red onion, carrots, potatoes (vegan not raw)
• Bragg Apple Cider All Natural Drink (Bristol Farms)
• fresh green juice - kale, spinach, apple (natural food store)
• salad - romaine, radish, red grapes, raisins, avocado (I know. Again with the controversial raisins)
• iced tea

Me, Me, Me, And What I Ate

I did a lot of eating today and that's okay by me. It was all good stuff.

I went to a BBQ today and someone brought an amazing kale salad. I guarantee I ate way more than my share.

For dinner, I made my kitchen clean-out curry a couple of days early. I'm unpredictable like that.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• Raw Revolution Chocolate Coconut Bliss Bar (natural food store)
• spoonful of almond butter
• Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar All Natural Drink (Bristol Farms)
• avocado and hummus rolled up in large chard leaves
• nectarine
• crudite - carrots, cherry tomatoes, cauliflower
• salad - mixed greens, kale, mandarins, dressed with ponzu, sesame oil, rice vinegar
• strawberries
• yellow vegetable curry - tomatoes, carrots, red onion, potatoes (vegan not raw)

As Close As I've Come To A Recipe Lately

I put the coffee pot in this still life because the two little bottles looked lonely.

Inspired by my friend Marianne, I made my own apple cider drink today. The directions are on the Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar label. I added 1 or 2 tablespoons of cider to a large glass of water and added some raw honey to taste. I think I'll have to do this a few more times to get it right. It definitely wasn't as good as the pre-made cider drink. I blame the "cook." I drank it anyway.

Went to the French place nearby for lunch. I went all vegan but only partially raw.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• Leaf Raw Vegan Mango Bread (natural food store)
• almond butter (Bristol Farms)
• nectarine
• cold salad trio - greens, artichokes, hearts of palm, tomato, olives, lentils, onion -vegan not raw
• handful dried white mulberries
• homemade apple cider vinegar, honey drink
• watermelon
• mixed greens with avocado, olive oil, and lemon juice

Apple Cider and Casablanca

It was an All Raw Saturday. (Sounds like something that would be in the brochure at a nudist camp.)

These apple cider drinks are totally my new deal. (Louie, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.)

I've been doing my raw/v thing for ten weeks now. Still feeling great. Still watching the numbers on the scale go down. Still feeling like I've found some magic and it's still easy. This is good, you guys.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• apple slices with raw almond butter (Bristol Farms)
• Raw Bowl - the one from Kind Kreme with all of the kale and stuff in it
• Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar All Natural Drink (Bristol Farms)
• handful of sprouted sunflower seeds
• salad - romaine, onions, peppers, tomatoes, avocado (This is a chicken salad at a local restaurant where I ask them to hold the chicken and add extra avocado.)
• iced tea

Wherefore Art Thou Raw?

I went to grab a juice at the natural food place this morning and they had that wonderful Ethiopian wrap thing there again. I answered the call.

For dinner Mr. Rosenberg and I went to a vegan restaurant nearby called Real Food Daily. All vegan but only one raw thing on the menu. (And it didn't involve kale.) Luckily, that one raw thing they had, I liked a lot. After I removed the small cilantro bush perched on top of my "raw bowl," the rest was lovely. We had a terrific tofu cheesecake for dessert (vegan, not raw) and that sort of made up for the fact that they didn't have more raw stuff. But not completely.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• green juice - my favorite: kale, spinach, apple (natural food store)
• Ethiopian Ater and Injera - mashed yellow peas in farro wrap - vegan, not raw (natural food store)
• coffee milkshake - cold pressed coffee, almond milk, raw cashew ice cream (Kind Kreme)
• Bragg Apple Cider and Honey drink (natural food store)
• Rainbow Bowl - kelp noodles, baby spinach, carrots, purple cabbage, red pepper, almond ginger dressing, mango, cilantro, mint, cashew crumble (Real Food Daily)
• tofu cheesecake - vegan, not raw (Real Food Daily)

A Chard Sandwich

Here is a backyard rose. Prettier than the other options today.

Chard Update: You were waiting to see what I was going to do with that big-ass chard weren't you? I cut the sides of the chard off of the stem, leaving two long chard strips. I put avocado and hummus on it, wrapped it up like a burrito-y wrap thing. It was very good. Not bitter, as I was expecting. I did not post a photo of these because although delightful tasting, they look really boring, you know, like rolled up leaves.

Mr. Rosenberg picked up some raw almond butter at Bristol Farms. Apparently you stand there and watch the guy make it. So much better than even the best stuff from the jar. I don't want to know how much it costs because artisanal anything is never inexpensive. I didn't post a photo of the almond butter either since it looks like diaper business.

I was at Bristol Farms myself today to pick up some of the apple cider drink. While I was there I saw that they also had a concord grape and acai version of the same cider thing. Brought a bottle home to try and it was aggressively not for me. I hadn't read the ingredients in the store, but now I see that the grape flavor has stevia in it. I don't like the stevia taste and it makes my stomach grumpy. Luckily, I bought a bottle of the regular stuff too so - crisis averted. It gets wild over here, I tell you.

What I ate today:

• coffeeeeeeeeee
• banana
• nectarine
• chard wrap w/ avocado and hummus
• apple slices with almond butter
• Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar All Natural Drink
• salad - red lettuce, avocado, sprouted sunflower seeds, olive oil, Himalayan pink salt
• blueberries

Large Chard

This chard arrived today. The family may have to all move out to the garage to accommodate its size in the house.

It is Organic Fruit and Vegetable Box Delivery Day which means it's also Clean Out The Fridge Day which means it's also Make A Curry Out Of All The Leftover Vegetables Day.

What I ate today:

• banana
• coffee
• handful of Brazil nuts
• salad - mixed greens w/spinach, avocado, sprouted sunflower seeds, olive oil, Himalayan pink salt
• raspberries
• vegetable curry - tomatoes, carrots, kale, potatoes (vegan, not raw)
• Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar All Natural Drink (natural food store)
• small piece (compared to the chard) dark chocolate - 85% cacao (Trader Joe's)

Put It On The Tray

Bob and I went out with friends for dinner tonight to a place called Lemonade. Lemonade is like if Soup Plantation was trying to get on the cover of Bon Appetit. It's cafeteria style and there are pre-made cold salads and hot stuff of all different kinds and a few vegan options. I got a salad trio. Three times the fun.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• salad - baby kale, tomato, sprouted sunflower seeds, olive oil, Himalayan pink salt, Lick Foods Garlic Dill Cashew Spread (natural food store)
• 6 Brazil nuts

Don't Mind If I Do

I had no idea I was in the mood for Ethiopian food until I saw the vegan Ethiopian food today at Grass Roots (natural food store) and then I had to have it. So I did. It was a happy lunch.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• nectarine
• green grapes
• 3 pieces Leaf Raw Vegan Mango Bread (natural food store)
• Lick Foods Garlic Dill Cashew Spread (natural food store)
• sprouted sunflowers seeds (Whole Foods)

• green beans sauteed w/olive oil and Himalayan pink salt - vegan not raw

So Very Everything

Found myself on the westside today so I took the opportunity to go to a raw restaurant called "Euphoria Loves Rawvolution." I know. I can't even. And everyone in there looks like they're in an American Apparel ad. However, the food is great. I would like one of these restaurants built inside my home, right next door to the built-inside-my-home Starbucks.

And yes, I had breakfast at "Urth Cafe." So LA.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• oatmeal with raisins  - vegan, not raw plus those controversial raisins  - cue Prince's "Controversy" (Urth Cafe)
• nectarine
• green grapes
• 1/2 avocado
• coconut jerky - curried coconut, cashew mayo (Rawvolution)
• raw vegan red enchilada - ancho chili wrap, romaine guacamole, salsa, mango, cashew mayo (Rawvolution)

I Am Hungry

Because I neglected to take any food photos today, here is a somewhat disturbing drawing of a cat holding a ham.

Have we talked about Cafe Gratitude yet? There are a couple of them in LA. It's vegan and also has some fantastic raw/v stuff too. The problem is, that at Cafe Gratitude, all of the items on the menu have names like "I am dazzling," "I am gracious," "I am fulfilled." If you try to just order the food by the name of what it is, "I'd like the raw pad thai, please," the server will answer, "Oh, you mean the I Am Terrific?" I always feel like I should go off menu and order the "I am self-conscious." Who wouldn't be, saying those names? The thing is though, the food is excellent.

My friend Molly was visiting from Ohio and she was nice enough to have lunch with me at Cafe Gratitude today. She had the I Am Dazzling and we shared a delightful I Am Awakening. Now? I Am Full.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana, nectarine, green grapes
• 6 Brazil nuts
• lemonade - this had sugar in it so it wasn't raw
• raw/v pad thai - kelp noodles, almond sauce with carrots, red bell pepper, shredded kale (Cafe Gratitude)
• cacao smoothie w/ a shot of coffee - almond milk, figs, dates, raw cacao, vanilla bean (Cafe Gratitude)
• vegan key lime pie - avocado lime custard topped with coconut meringue, with a pecan macadamia date crust (Cafe Gratitude)
• Raw Revolution Coconut Delight Bar (natural food store)
• salad - baby kale, Lick Food cashew garlic dill spread, avocado, sprouted sunflower seeds

Cold Never Bothered Me Anyway

It was hot again today. I ran into Bristol Farms for popsicles. Remember those kind that I don't like?  I bought two boxes of them. I know. They're far from perfect (they have a stabilizer as an ingredient) but they are the only ones I saw that don't have any kind of sweetener at all. I should be making my own fruit/veg pops at home, but I didn't pull that together yet and did I mention it was hot?

Went to a birthday party at the park in the evening. They were serving Mexican food. I stayed vegan not raw and it was nice to mix it up a little. They were showing a movie in the park after the party, so I ate popcorn while watching "Frozen." I let it go.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• 2 Mango Bread cracker things - from yesterday (natural food store)
• raw, organic almond butter
• more coffee (iced this time)
• blueberries
• 6 Brazil nuts
• grapefruit juice
• artichoke, tomato, hearts of palm salad (vegan not raw)
• cold lentils (vegan not raw)
• small green salad
• 2 Palapa Azul Smart Pops (Bristol Farms)
• 3 Mango Bread crackers
•  garlic dill cashew spread (Lick Foods)
• pineapple (Thanks, Gabby!)
• coffee
• black bean, corn and zucchini
• rice topped with guacamole
• popcorn
• Organic Spicy Lemonade - Evolution Fresh

Did I Mention That It's Hot Here?

This is what I look like with my face melting off in a '97 Volvo station wagon with broken A/C. You're welcome.

It was flippin' hot again today. I must have had light heatstroke. This is the only excuse I can come up with for purchasing Leaf Raw Vegan Mango Bread. It was $9.99 for 16 rubbery crackers. Mango, you say? Are they sweet or are they savory? Exactly. Yes. They are sort of both and then what do you do with that? Beat yourself over the head with the "bread" for being addled enough to buy it. They weren't bad, exactly. They reminded me a little of the wraps I bought before, but with less taste. These definitely go in the "More Reasons To Get A Dehydrator And Make Your Own (but better)" file.

The thing is, eating raw/v can be the cheapest way of eating there is, but like most anything, you can complicate it and make it really spendy. Curiosity got the better of me, and my ten bucks. I'll be more careful next time. Probably.

What I ate today:

• coffee (surprise!)
• 2 bananas
• 6 Brazil nuts
• Evolution Fresh Organic Spicy Lemonade (Fresh n Easy)
• green juice - kale, spinach, apple (natural foods store)
• Lick Foods Paprika Cashew Spread (natural foods store)
• 2 Leaf Raw Vegan Mango Bread slices (?) (natural foods store)
• Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar All Natural Drink - Yes, it has happened. I like it now.
• salad - romaine, onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, avocado - this is the one I order at the coffee shop that's the off the menu chicken salad with no chicken.
• iced tea

Hot Hot Heat

It was another hot day, a double popsicle day, but apparently it's never too hot to drive to Kind Kreme and get my favorite lunch. If you would have told me three months ago that a Raw Bowl and a green drink would be my favorite lunch, I would have laughed so hard we'd have both been sort of uncomfortable.

It's supposed to be 102 degrees tomorrow. I will wear white. I will drink water. I will do a lot of cursing when forced to leave the house for any reason. I'm a baby when reminded that LA is a desert.

Oh, and I lost another half a pound. Possibly from sweating.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• steel cut oats soaked overnight in almond milk
• strawberries
• raw bowl - my favorite thing with kale and stuff (Kind Kreme)
• green juice - kale, cucumber, spinach, lemon, ginger (Kind Kreme)
• 2 Palapa Azul Smart Pops (Bristol Farms)
• edamame - vegan not raw, I made these for Bob but ate most of them myself. High five.
• green beans - vegan not raw, left-over from last night, sauteed with olive oil and Himalayan pink salt

What Else Is In There?

Today my friend Karen and I were on the phone and at some point ended up comparing what weird old food we had left in our purses. (We're close like that.) She had some kind of nut mix, I had a half eaten box of raisins. Cut to me in a doctor's office waiting room three hours later and hungry. Yep, I ate the vintage raisins. They were delicious OR they were just average raisins that were a little stuck together from being in the bottom of the box in my purse and I was just starving. It's a glamorous life.

Yesterday, I bought a new kind of bar when I was in my buy-everything mood - Raw Revolution Siprulina Dream. The Raw Revolution people get points for not using any puns in their marketing. Out of the package, the bar was sort of black with green flecks in it. The ingredients were the usuals - cashews, dates, sunflower seeds, agave, almonds, sprouted flax plus spirulina. If you're not familiar with spirulina, it's an algae super food. (Hence, the green flecks.) It had the consistency of a Lara Bar. It was fine. Just fine.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• Raw Revolution Organic Live Food Bar "Spirulina Dream" - (Bristol Farms)
• 1 banana
• 1 avocado
• 8 Brazil nuts
• half a box of weird old raisins
• popsicle - Palapa Azul Smart Pop (Bristol Farms)
• salad - butter lettuce, avocado, olive oil, Himalayan pink salt, Lick Foods garlic dill cashew spread (natural foods store)
• green beans - lightly sauteed with olive oil, Himalayan pink salt (vegan not totally raw)
• raspberries

Spree

It was hot out today and the A/C isn't working in my car. It was 88 outside and 188 inside the station wagon. I went to the Bristol Farms market hungry, thirsty, and hot. This is a vulnerable combination for my Master Card. Everything at Bristol is extra-spendy and I spent a lot on things I've never had before because of my weakened state.

I got these Palapa Azul Smart Pops: fruit and vegetable no sweetener added popsicles. These were ice on a stick with no real flavor. Good to know. I ate one anyway. Next I got some Coco Libre coconut water with pineapple. I hadn't had this brand of coco-pineapple before and OMG it was bad. Took one sip and poured the rest down the sink, along with three bucks. I got a small bottle of Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar All Natural Drink. I know the Raw/Vs use and drink the straight vinegar a lot. This is vinegar plus water plus honey. The vinegar taste/smell reminds me of coloring Easter eggs, but once I got used to that, I didn't mind it so much. I think I have turned a raw/v corner by drinking this stuff. It feels like a commitment but I might be able to do this, but now I kind of want Peeps.

What I ate today:

• 4 Brazil nuts
• coffee
• 1 avocado
• raw falafel (natural food store)
• green juice - kale, spinach, apple (natural food store)
• Palapa Azul Smart Pop
• Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar All Natural Drink (Bristol Farms)
• jicama
• guacamole
• 6 raw Manzanilla olives

Brunch Trio

Flowers from the guys.

Mother's Day: I had three lovely brunches. One, at Legoland with the guys, a repeat of yesterday. Two with my delightful in-laws at a restaurant in Culver City called Rush Street. The best I could do there vegan-wise was a "felafel burger," a felafel in the shape of a patty. I got it without the bun. Added a side salad. Three was with my mom at a restaurant nearby called The Raymond. Not any vegan choices at brunch time so I had a shrimp salad without the shrimp, without the bacon, and without the hardboiled egg. What was left after that? Not so much. Had a raw bar soon after getting home.

For dinner, I tried out some kelp noodles that have been sitting in my fridge. I tossed them with a little olive oil, fresh tomato, and shallots. Pretty okay. The noodles were really crunchy, which I wasn't expecting. They also have no taste whatsoever.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• 2 bananas
• mango smoothie
• felafel
• small green salad
• iced tea
• salad - romaine, avocado, orange sections, dijon dressing
• Raw Bar - pumpkin and cranberry (natural food store)
• kelp noodles - tomato, shallot, olive oil (natural food store)
• 2 raw coconut macaroons
• coffee (more to bookend the day)

Legos and Apples

There is a bear made of Legos with a Lego raccoon on its head near the place I got the apple things. So here is a photo of the apple things with a Lego/Bear/Raccoon situation in the background.

During the day we had Legoland food. We had breakfast at the hotel. I got everything at the buffet I could eat and be raw: fruit and a smoothie. We were in the park for lunch. We went to "Wok n Bowl Ramen" because nothing can have a name that isn't a pun anymore. I had a stir-fried vegetable thing with a little rice.

But more importantly...

What I was really waiting for were the apple fries. I had these when I was here a few years ago and really loved them. They're not raw, obviously, but I thought they were vegan enough for a day at an amusement park. Fried pieces of Granny Smith apples, these are usually served sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon and a side of caramel dipping sauce stuff. This time around, they were nice enough to make them for me without the sugar and dipping sauce. The apples were okay but nothing as special as they were in my memory. I know my tastes have changed but I'm also thinking that the stuff that actually made them really good was the sugar and sauce, but I ate 'em. Yes I did.

For dinner we went to a place near the hotel. They had a thing where they will make you a salad and toss it and put whatever you want in it from a list of nice things. Very good.

What I ate today:

• 1 banana
• mango smoothie
• coffee
• stir-fried vegetables and tofu with rice - bok choy, muchrooms, red bell peppers, rice (vegan, not raw)
• apple "fries"
• salad - mixed greens, Kalamata olives, golden beets, avocado, snow peas, mushrooms with goddess dressing (Tin Leaf Restaurant)
• cafe Americano
• organic popcorn with olive oil (Trader Joe's)

On the Road Again

This time I'm with the fam and we're at Legoland! As it turns out, amusement parks and their adjoining hotels are not so much known for raw vegan treats. However Legoland still does a pretty good job of offering a lot of fruit and salads on the menus.

We got room service for dinner. I ordered a chicken salad with no chicken and no blue cheese and extra avocado. Just as glamorous as it sounds. It ended up being sort of anemic looking but you bet I ate it anyway. Washed it down with coffee and a Raw Bar I brought from home. They do have one place in the park that has these lovely Granny Smith apple "fries." I may get some tomorrow sans dipping sauce and have a little fun in the vegan, not raw category.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• steel cut oats soaked overnight in coconut milk
• strawberries
• 1 avocado
• green juice - kale/spinach/apple (picked up at the natural food store on our way out of town)
• popcorn with olive oil and sea salt - car snacks! Vegan, not raw. (Trader Joe's)
• salad - iceberg lettuce, cherry tomatoes, avocado, Italian-ish dressing
• Live Smart Cranberry Pumpkin Seed Raw Bar (natural food store)

Pretty Simple

I originally took a photo of some butter lettuce for today's post,  but then I thought you might enjoy looking at what was on the counter behind the butter lettuce instead.

Many people have asked if I have to cook separate meals for myself and the family. My answer is kind of but not really sort of sometimes. Mr. Rosenberg will generally eat whatever I'm eating and Bob doesn't really eat meat at home so I can give him pasta or quesadillas or something similar and Mr. R might eat some of that too. When it comes to "cooking," the stuff I'm having isn't generally cooked, just put together and doesn't take much time. So if the heart of the "Do you make two meals?' question is - "Is mealtime a pain in the ass when you're feeding the whole family?"  No. No, it isn't.

Did some raw and some cooked vegan today. For dinner I made vegetable curry over quinoa for Mr. R and myself. Bob opted out but requested a bowl of black beans with some cheese, carrots, and strawberries on the side. Easy peasy.

What I ate today:

• raw steel cut oats soaked overnight in almond milk
• strawberries
• coffee
• salad - butter lettuce and raw Kalamata olive hummus
• green juice - kale, spinach, apple (natural foods store)
• 4 raw organic Brazil nuts
• banana
• vegetable curry - carrots, onion, tomatoes, potatoes, broccoli rabe
• quinoa

Oh, My Aching... Nothing

I used to get a lot of headaches. A lot. Like maybe three a week that required Ibuprofin. I just realized that I haven't had a headache since week two of the raw/v. Miraculous. I also used to get bad cramps every month during my special lady time, but now, the cramps are barely noticeable and don't require Advil. High five.

What I ate today:

• 1 banana
• coffee
• macadamia and cashew nuts
• green grapes
• 1 avocado
• crackers - Go Raw Sunflower Flax Snax (natural foods store)
• cashew paprika spread  - Lick Foods (natural foods store) I've said it before but seriously? Lick?
• salad - mixed greens, onion, avocado, fennel, raw Kalamata olive hummus (hummus/natural food store)
• dark chocolate - 71% cacao (Trader Joe's)
• raspberries

Hello, Lover

I got these crunchy, pseudo-cheese, kale chip things today. These are kale coated with some version of cashew/nutritional yeast/Himalayan pink salt/etc - you know, the usual suspects. There were about five in the whole bag, they were two billion dollars, and they are my new secret boyfriend. I am grateful that you were not here to witness me trying to get the last tiny crumbs of "Kale Krunch" out of the bag and somehow transfer them to my face. Because of their ridiculous cost, I most likely will not be buying them often again but we'll always have those magical forty seconds.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• juice - kale, spinach, apple
• Alive & Radiant Quite Cheezy "Kale Krunch" (natural foods store)
• cold beet and orange salad - vegan, not raw (out to dinner at Lemonade Restaurant)
• cauliflower, almond, golden raisin cold salad with Indian spices (still out to dinner)
• handful of raw macadamia nuts
• iced tea

Celebrate

Today my friend Karen took me to lunch at Kind Kreme. I got two of my favorite things there, that raw bowl I like and my favorite juice. After being gone four days, I was never so excited to see a bowl of kale. Today was Bob's birthday. Some of his friends were over in the afternoon for Nerf gun fighting, pizza, and cake. His friend Desmond is a vegan so I had picked him up a vegan chocolate donut (and one for myself!) to take the place of the birthday cake that the two of us would not be having. It was delightful.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• 1 banana
• Kind Kreme Raw Bowl - so much kale-y goodness
• The Alkalizer - my favorite green drink, kale and ginger and grapefruit and other good things
• popcorn - party snack, not raw but vegan
• handful of green grapes
• vegan chocolate donut
• lemon ginger juice drink - Evolution Fresh (bought at the natural foods store)

Last Day In the ATL

This was my last day in Atlanta. My lovely Atlanta friends Dera and Sarah took me to a place in Grant Park for brunch to a cafe called Ria's Bluebell. Dera chose it because they are known for making vegans happy.

Before even seeing the menu, I was encouraged by the long wait (almost always a good sign) and the tattooed and pierced wait staff (almost always means vegan-friendly). The menu had some great vegan options and our waiter brought out the chef to talk me through it. There were some raw/v salad ideas but after three days of fruit plates and vegetable platters, I was ready for something more. I picked a vegan frittata and decided to go vegan, not raw for this meal. I was not disappointed. The food was great and the company was even better.

I lost two pounds on this trip.

Bye Atlanta. Next time I see you I'll bring more Raw Bars.

• coffee
• pineapple, blackberries, honeydew
• cornmeal crusted tofu frittata - zucchini, kale, broccoli, tofu, potatoes, herbs, red pepper romanesco
• 4 goji maca coconut macaroons  - brought from home and eaten during a layover at the Las Vegas airport

Can you please ask the kitchen to...?

Thanks to my friend Marinka, I was forced (by her) to realize that I left something off of yesterday's list that she had witnessed me consuming: a glass of orange juice. (Thanks, Food Police!)

At lunch today the conference we're at set up a tea for us complete with a bunch of tiniest sandwiches and scones and little sugar things, none of which I could eat. The hotel kitchen people were nice enough to bring me a small vegetable plate. Then at dinner the hotel kitchen guys came through again.

I've had a wonderful time but I'm really looking forward to getting back to ... Kale-ifornia. Oh, yes I did.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• pineapple and berries
• 2 moji coconut macaroons (brought with me from home)
• peppers, carrots, asparagus, olive tapenade, hummus
• marcona almonds
• gazpacho - this was amazing
• vegetable plate - cauliflower, wood ear mushrooms, onions, pea sprouts (this was vegan but not all raw)
• coffee

Day and Night

I've decided that instead of the not-great photo I took of my food this evening, it might be more enjoyable for you to look at a photo of the band playing in the bar of our hotel. In this photo they are wrapping up a lovely cover of Michael Jackson's "Workin' Day and Night."

Okay. I've been having an excellent time but, not so much with the food so far here in Atlanta... until dinner. A friend took a few of us to dinner at a shmancy Italian restaurant in Buckhead. The kitchen was kind enough to put together a vegetable plate for me. It was outstanding. Vegan but not raw and it was actual food and I was so very pleased.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• (hard) honeydew and cantaloupe - from the hotel breakfast buffet
• more coffee
• garden salad - a garden that only grows lettuce and frisee, apparently
• glorified trail mix that I brought with me - Sunfood Raw, Organic Mango Macadamia Adventure
(blend of dried mangos, macadamia nuts, goji berries, cashews, mulberries & cacao nibs)
• COFFEE
• gazpacho - wonderful
• mixed vegetable plate including sauteed spinach, mushrooms, broccoli rabe, and peas
• iced tea
• and more coffee

On the Road: Day One

So... I had a brief layover in Las Vegas with a connecting to flight to Atlanta and no time to forage for airport food. By the time I got to my hotel it was 10:30pm. I could have gotten a $10 room service dinner salad but that sounded sad. I'll wait and see what they've got for me tomorrow.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• 1 banana
• strawberries
• Sunflower Flax Snax - Go Raw (natural foods store)
• with the last of the raw peppercorn cashew spread - Lick Foods (natural foods store)
• 2 Raw Bars
• apples

Packing

Okay, I may have over done it in the travel snacks department. I did a panic-shop as if I'm going to a place where they've never heard of food. This haul ought to take the place of the mini-package of airline snack mix that I will not be eating on the plane. Maybe those dried persimmons pieces will be the thing that holds me together until Sunday. You never know.

It was in the 90s here today so after-school raw/v ice cream was mandatory.

What I ate today:

• raw oatmeal - soaked overnight with chia seeds and almond milk + strawberries
• coffee
• salad - red lettuce, avocado, olive oil, Himalayan pink salt
• celery with peppercorn cashew spread (Lick Foods)
• coffee flavored raw vegan "ice cream" - (Kind Kreme)
• fresh juice - I forgot what all was in it but it's very green and kale-y.
