It Was a Happy Thanksvegan

We made it through the eating-est holiday of the year and kept on the vegan track. My mother-in-law brought turkey for the meat eaters. Everything else was vegan-ified.  We had five meat eaters in the crew and four veggie/vegans. The menu looked like this:

  • Celebration Roast - a vegan nut and vegetable loaf thing. It was pretty good. (Whole Foods)
  • Dried Apricot and Black Currant Stuffing - my favorite recipe with Earth's Balance "butter" substituted for the real thing, and vegan stuffing mix substituted for the regular. It was fantastic. Couldn't tell the difference.
  • Mashed Potatoes - I made these with Earth's Balance faux butter and a little salt and they were great.
  • Vegan Mushroom Gravy - This was pre-made and sort of meh. (Whole Foods)
  • Caramelized Brussel Sprouts w/ Toasted Garlic
  • Sauteed Carrots w/ Honey and Lemon
  • Bread Rolls - vegan
  • Cranberry Sauce - just raw cranberries with a little sugar and some orang zest
  • Vegan Coconut Cake - I bought this from Real Food Daily and it was terrific
  • Vegan Pumpkin Pie - I ordered this from Real Food Daily too and it was terrible. Really terrible, like no one ate more than a bite and we threw the rest away terrible.
  • Water
  • Sparkling Juice
  • Red Wine for the drinkers
  • Coffee

This whole thing was much easier to pull off than I had anticipated.
For a list of what I ate Friday and Saturday, consult the list above.

More Things That Want To Be Other Things

I had a vegan salami and vegan cheese sandwich today. It tasted so strongly of onion that I pulled the sandwich apart to remove the onion and there was no onion. So, I guess we know what they put in the "salami."

HERE is a good link to some vegan Thanksgiving options. I also got some ideas from my vegan guru friend, Trina. I'll share them here soon. I think this weekend will be my trial run for new vegan Thanksgiving recipes. Probably.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• oatmeal w/ bananas, raisins
• vegan salami/vegan cheese sandwich (Grassroots)
• green drink - kale, spinach, cucumber, apple, lemon, orange
• green salad - mixed lettuce, sunflower seeds, avocado, tomato, olive oil, Bragg's Nutritional  Yeast
• apple
• pear

Here Are Some Carrots

Little, purple fingerling potatoes showed up in the organic delivery box today.  They were very tiny with a different texture than a regular potato - smoother and less grainy.  I should have taken a photo of them but I was in too much of a hurry to eat them, so here's a picture of some carrots that were also in the box.

I threw together some chia seeds with almond milk and raw cacao powder and let it sit in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. What happened next tasted like chocolate pudding - in a tapioca-ish boba kind of way. It's good. My 8 year-old likes it too. Bob liking a raw/vegan dessert = minor miracle.

What I ate today:

2 bananas
baked purple fingerling potatoes
sunflower butter
lightly sauteed green beans
baby kale salad w/ olive oil, Himalayan pink salt, and sunflower seeds
2 Medjool dates
chia seed chocolate pudding

Vegan Thanksgiving Hostess Plans

We've been talking about Thanksgiving around here. Traditionally, we host our family and friends at our place. There will be a turkey breast for our non-vegan guests. (Thanks, Honeybaked.)  I have been talked out of "Tofurkey" by approximately every member of Facebook, so not going there. I've been looking into how to make some vegan versions of the usual sides.

A vegetable side, probably green beans sauteed with shallots - no problem. Maybe a green salad AKA Thanksgiving roughage - easy peasy. Sweet potatoes are simple and I think my usual stuffing recipe is vegan. Some of the things I'm going to try out before Turkey/Not Turkey Day will be vegan mashed potatoes, (If they're bad, I'll just make the real thing for our guests.) and vegan mushroom gravy, instead of turkey gravy.  I can get a vegan pie and a non-vegan pie. And some variations on rolls.

I'll let you know how the new recipes turn out. You know I will.

Today I ate:

green juice - kale, spinach, cucumber, apple, orange, lemon (Grassroots)
bananas and strawberries
mixed baby kale salad w/ avocados, sunflower seeds, olive oil and Bragg's Nutritional Yeast
Delicata squash sauteed in olive oil w/ Himalayan pink salt
felafel w/ hummus, tomatoes, and Persian cucumbers

A Quick Vegan Website Recommendation

I'm new to this website that has some great, easy, vegan recipes for those times you aren't eating raw, but are still eating vegan. I love The Vegan Stoner.

Trial and Error

I tried the Go Raw Organic Super Lemon Cookies. "Cookies" should be in quotes. It's more like a sesame cracker mixed with Murphy's Oil Soap for Hardwood Floors. Despite that, I still had a difficult time putting them down.

Today for lunch I tried to eat one of those Back to Life Raw Vegan Chees-y Pizzas because apparently I don't read my blog and forgot how not good it is.

What I ate today:

• 2 bananas
• macadamia nuts
• coffee
• part of a Back to Like Raw Vegan Cheeze-y Pizza (Grassroots)
• green drink - kale, spinach, cucumber, apple, orange, lemon (Grassroots)
• Ratel Intl Vegan Ater - yellow peas in injera wrap (Grassroots)
• Go Raw Organic Lemon Super Cookies (Pavillions)
• kale salad w/ olive oil and nutritional yeast

Hope Springs Eternal

Did they taste anything like "carrot cake?" No, they did not. Did I eat the whole bag anyway? Yes, yes I did. The ingredients are organic coconut, sprouted organic sesame seeds, organic carrots, organic dates, and organic nutmeg and the cookies taste just like all of those things.  Not even close to carrot cake but small and sweet and sesame-y, and they're good with coffee so they pass my snack test.

What I ate today:

• banana
• coffee
• handful macadamias
• Trader Joe's Cold Pressed Yellow Juice
• 1 avocado
• 1 apple
• 1 pear
• Go Raw Carrot Cake Super Cookies (Pavillions)
• more coffee
• Happy Vegan Salad - wheat with cranberry and hazelnuts, quinoa with cucumber and beets, green hummus, tabbouleh, mixed greens (Tender Greens)

And Then There Was Gracias Madre

Last night we had dinner at a vegan Mexican place in West Hollywood called Gracias Madre. You guys? This is the new place where I would be happy to eat every meal.  I wanted everything on the menu but settled for half of everything on the menu, or at least that's what it felt like when I left. The place itself was lovely and it was a perfect night to sit on the patio. They has plenty of raw options but I went cooked for this visit. Potato gorditas and sweet potato flautas and a vegan flan were some of the highlights. If you're in the neighborhood, get yourself there. There's another one in San Francisco. Apparently both places have ties to the Cafe Gratitude people.  Not surprised. And yes, I said vegan flan.

Wherein I Don't Know What An Adzuki Bean Is

I got a pre-made salad at TJ's today. It had many ingredients, one of which was "adzuki beans." I Googled it and fell into an adzuki bean wiki page that was difficult to climb out of. The short story is that the beans come from a vine and adzuki is Japanese for "small bean." These small beans were sort of nondescript but innocuous. I can't imagine ever saying, "I sure could go for a bowl of adzuki beans about now." But then, I never thought I could be sold on cashew cheese and look where we are.

What I ate today:

• banana
• coffee
• raw nuts
• Trader Joe's Yellow Cold Pressed Juice
• Trader Joe's Mega Crunchy Salad With A Bite - quinoa, carrots, adzuki beans, sunflower seeds, cranberries, cilantro dressing
• felafel and hummus
• apple
• coconut water

My Produce Section

I baked some kale chips today. As usual, I had a lot of kale laying around plus my son loves the chips. Basic recipe: 350 degree oven. Parchment lined baking sheet. Kale leaves torn in pieces, no stems. Little olive oil, little salt. Bake 10 - 15 minutes until crispy but no browned edges.

Oh, and I went to Menchies and had weird non-dairy frozen "yogurt" that I don't want to know what's in it. And yes, it was good.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• handful cashews
• green salad - mixed greens, avocado, olive oil, nutritional yeast
• pear
• Non-Dairy Pomegranate and Pineapple Frozen "Yogurt" (Menchies)
• apple
• kale chips
• veg curry - cauliflower, peas, tomatoes, coconut milk, curry powder, turmeric, pink salt, brown rice

Must We Call It Pizza?

I tried a slice of raw "pizza" today. It's in the shape of a slice of pizza, but the similarities end there. You can not pick this up and eat it with your hands,  it's far to moist for that and falls apart. It's really fork food. There are fresh tomatoes, no sauce, and a nut cheese that tasted just like... nut cheese. The crust was nondescript. Even after my stellar review,  I still ate the whole thing because it was raw and it was something a little different.

What I ate today:

• banana
• coffee
• Back to Life Raw Cheeze-y Pizza, flax, soaked sunflower seeds, soaked cashews, tomato, onion, celery, basil, parsley, garlic, olives, olive oil, lemon, turmeric, paprika, cayenne, black pepper, sea salt (Grassroots)
• green drink - kale, spinach, cucumber, apple, lemon, ginger (Grassroots)
• green salad - mixed greens, avocado, tomatoes, walnut parm, olive oil
• Rahel Atar - Ethiopian yellow peas, injera, spices

Luscious and Liberated Again

One of my friends gave me this cookbook. It looks interesting. I'll let you know what I find.

I forgot to mention yesterday that I tried some of the raw "parmesan" that Trina made. I had it on a salad with olive oil and it was so super good, I had it again tonight.

I had lunch with Karen today at Cafe Gratitude. Not surprisingly, we both got what we always get, the kelp noodles and the chocolatey smoothie with a coffee shot. High five.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• handful Brazil nuts
Liberated - Marinated kelp noodles, heirloom cherry tomatoes, local black and green olives, wild arugula, basil hempseed pesto, cashew ricotta, Brazil nut parmesan, avocado (Cafe Gratitude)
• Luscious - (Smoothie) Almond milk, figs, dates, raw cacao, vanilla bean, coffee Cafe Gratitude
• green salad - mixed greens, baby kale, tomatoes, almonds, olive oil, Trina's magic raw parm
• cup of strawberries/raspberries

Happy New Year Honey, Honey

Minutiae: I drove through Starbucks today and got a soy milk latte. Had about half and then my stomach started hurting, so I abandoned it. Maybe the espresso was a little rough for my delicate system. *curtsey*

We're in the middle of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Apples with honey are a traditional Rosh Hashanah food that signifies hope that God will judge our last year kindly and look down on us with sweetness. And they are raw. And depending where you stand on the great honey debate, it is also maybe, sort of, might be vegan. Or not. It's tricky. Nevertheless, Happy New Year.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• handful Brazil nuts
• Trader Joe's Coconut Water
• carrots w/ Lick Peppercorn Cashew Spread
• cup of strawberries
• part of a soy latte
• apples w/ honey
• green salad - mixed lettuce, baby kale, micro greens, tomatoes, avocado, olive oil, Bragg's Nutritional Yeast Seasoning
• red grapes

Wednesday, September 24, 2014

I was putting away the tostada shells from last night, many of them broken. Then, I remembered that there was a little salsa left in the fridge. This is how I happened to eat chips and salsa before 9am.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• handful Brazil nuts, raisins
• banana
• corn tostada shells w/pico de gallo
• 2 Trader Joe's Raw Apple Banana Fruit Bars
• Cold Pressed Trader Joe's Yellow Juice
• vegetable curry - sweet potatoes, peas, tomatoes, mushrooms

Muchas Tostadas

We used to have the classic "Taco Tuesdays" at our house. That morphed into "Tostada Tuesdays." I had a different plan for tonight, but my son is requesting "Tostada Monday" so that's what we're doing. It's not an interesting story, but it is a true one.

What I ate today:

• banana
• handful of Brazil nuts
• green drink - kale, spinach, cucumber, apple. lemon (Grassroots)
• carrots w/ Lick Raw Peppercorn Cashew Spread
• 1/2 cup raisins
• baby kale salad w/ avocado, almonds, ginger dressing
• 3 tostadas, corn tortillas, cabbage, avocado, tomatoes, black beans, pico de gallo

Saturday, September 20, 2014

We're headed to a fundraising party for Bob's school tonight. I don't know what the food situation will be, and to avoid the very likely risk of standing around eating baby carrots all night, I'm eating before we go. The party should be fun. Parents that I like very much, dressed up in going out clothes throwing cash at a silent auction after hanging out at an open bar. I'm volunteering at the event which is great for me because large parties can often freak me out in an oh-my-God-why-am-I-here-I-forgot-I-was-an-introvert sort of way and helping out will give me something to do. All good.

What I ate today (so far):

• coffee
• brown rice with rice milk and blueberries
• coconut water (Trader Joe's)
• handful Brazil nuts
• 6 Olivos del Mar organic green olives
• 2 vegan oatmeal chocolate chip cookies (Trader Joe's)
• Raw Bowl - kale and assorted cashew cheeses (Kind Kreme)
• green juice - kale, celery, cucumber, lemon

The Perks of Being Friends With an Amazing Vegan Cook

My friend Trina is an amazing vegan cook and baker.  She blogs about it over at Today she kindly brought me two raw cookie things - one fig and walnut, one plum and almond - and some lovely raw walnut "parmesan." The cookies are dense and delightful. She wrote on the cookie packages "made for coffee" and naturally I just happened to be drinking some coffee when she dropped them off so I ate both of them immediately. SO GOOD. I managed to get a picture of one of them before demolishing it. Looking forward to trying out the walnut parm, maybe tomorrow.

What I ate today:
• coffee
• steel cut oats soaked overnight in almond milk w/ blueberries
• a million carrots w/ a helluva lot of raw olive hummus
• 2 Trina cookies
• mixed vegetables w/brown rice (Charm Vegan)
• Thai tea

About Last Weekend

I was in Santa Barbara last weekend for my birthday. Santa Barbara has a number of vegan/vegetarian-friendly restaurants because it's Santa Barbara and of course it does.

On Saturday night we ate at Mesa Verde, a mostly vegan place that opened a few months ago.  The food was great. We ordered too much of it, but ate it all. We got the roasted brussel sprouts with jackfruit "chorizo," black bean street tacos, blue lake green beans with heirloom tomatoes, fez seven vegetable tagine, roasted vegetables with couscous, a Margherita flatbread for the boy, and some dessert that I don't remember what it was but I remember liking it. Everything was great.

I ordered a rooibos iced tea and found out that I am quite allergic to rooibos. I popped a couple of Benadryl and was good to go. I find that it's so much easier to eat when your throat isn't swelled shut. (Pro-tip)

It was a fine birthday. Hello Fifty.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• 6 kiwi berries
• carrots w/ Back To Life Raw Kalamata Hummus (Grassroots)
• salad - mixed greens, baby kale, avocado, almonds, olive oil, Bragg's Nutritional Yeast Seasoning
• Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey Drink (Grassroots)
• 3 figs
• lightly sauteed chard, garlic, red and yellow peppers, garbanzo beans, mushrooms, olive oil, 1/2 cup brown rice

Still Here, Still Raw Vegan

I'm great, thanks. How are you? I know, it's been awhile. So, I've been doing the raw/v for 5-1/2 months now and it has become second nature. I'm an expert at scanning menus for food that will work for me. Shopping is easy. I have my favorites and go-tos. I still have not sprung for a juicer, Cuisinart, or dehydrator and at this point, I'm thinking I probably won't. (We have a teensy kitchen with extra-teensy counter space and I'd rather not fill it with appliances.) I won't say it's all been effortless, but it's going well and it's working for me.

Kiwi berries came in our organic box this week. They're like little olive sized kiwis but without the hairy exterior. Super good.

What I ate today:

• 2 bananas
• 3 dates
• carrots
• Hungarian Paprika Lick Cashew Spread (Grassroots)
• Trader Joe's Cold Pressed Yellow Juice
• lightly sauteed green beans w/ olive oil and Himalayan pink salt
• 3 vegetarian tostadas - corn tortilla, pintos, cabbage, tomato, pico de gallo
• 6 kiwi berries

We had a delightful dinner at our friend Gabby's house. Make your own tostadas - really good and easy to make vegan. Also enjoyed the best watermelon I've had yet this summer.

Today I tried the new Trader Joe's Kale Chips. You can see my review here:

It May Have Been 4 Bananas

Cruising through the day. Then 4:00pm hit with a blinding headache. Wasn't sure where dinner was going to come from, but I knew I wasn't making it. Mr. Rosenberg stopped at Bristol Farms on the way home and picked up some stuff. I have a million exciting stories just like this one!

The Run Around

It was a running around kind of day. An eat on the run, kind of day. The kind of day where you end up doing all of your eating standing up by the kitchen sink. (The running around was only interrupted by standstill traffic on the 10.)

•  coffee
•  2 bananas
•  pine nuts and raisins
•  popcorn w/olive oil and sea salt (Trader Joe's)

Yesterday: A Detour

So... yesterday. It was my friend Jennifer's birthday and a group of us met for dim sum in Rosemead. Trying to stay vegan at dim sum is a challenge and raw is not an option but I made the vegan part happen. There was some sauteed spinach-y broccoli-ish vegetable, a tofu thing, and something called "fungus pocket." It was great. And then there was birthday cake. Beautiful, sweet and delicious, non-vegan birthday cake. I had a piece and managed not to go down in flames. I felt fine afterward.

At dinner I found myself at Antigua in Highland Park. I had to decide whether I was getting the side salad or a vegetable sandwich. I chose the veg sandwich. With fries. No raw yesterday.

Today I'm back.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• 2 pears
• handful Brazil nuts
• Trader Joe's Cold Pressed Green Juice
• carrots w/ eggplant hummus
• dark chocolate w/raisins and pecans
• Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar All Natural Drink (Grassroots)
• spinach salad w/avocado, micro greens, green onions, tomato, pine nuts, ginger dressing
• sauteed zucchini, collard greens, chard w/red onions,

The Goal Is 12.5

This is where the magic happens. Droopy hydrangeas and all.

Today I went back to City of Hope to try and give blood platelets after spending the last few days trying to get my iron up so that I can be an eligible candidate. Find out what happened HERE or watch the video below.

Lunch was at old favorite, Lemonade. They have little symbols on the menu so that you're able to tell which food is nut free, lactose free, gluten free, vegetarian, or vegan. (We're a high maintenance people, here in Southern California.)

What I ate today:

• coffee
• Total cereal w/almond milk
• banana
• black lentils w/purple cauliflower (Lemonade)
• kale w/hazelnuts  (Lemonade)
• quinoa w/tomatoes  (Lemonade)
• 1 cup Brazil nuts
• Trader Joe's Yellow Cold Pressed Juice
• spinach salad w/ avocado, microgreens, green tomatoes
• coconut water

That's A Lot Of Bran, People

Guys. I'm still going strong with the iron so I'll be ready for my platelet donation appointment on Saturday. Now that I've been enjoying all too much All Bran, I just read that there is more iron in Product 19 or Total than All Bran. Is Product 19 even still a thing anymore? I guess I need to go back to the store.

I have had a lot of beet juice. I have had spinach and kale. I have had copious amounts of Cream of Wheat. So today's "What I Ate" looks a little different than usual since I'm still working on the iron situation. I really don't have a secret thing for Cream of Wheat that I've been keeping from you. I swear.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• grapefruit juice
• Cream of Wheat
• beet/orange juice
• kale, spinach, avocado, tomato salad w/ginger citrus dressing
• All Bran cereal w/almond milk
• more Cream of Wheat
• carrots
• apples
• raisins

Wednesday, August 20, 2014

Today I went to donate some blood platelets for a friend who's in the hospital. I've donated before, but today, even though my iron count was normal, it wasn't high enough for me to donate. I was sent home with instructions on how to raise my iron levels and a new appointment set for Saturday morning.

I went shopping for a bunch of iron rich foods and I guess I have a pretty clear idea of what I'll be eating for the next few days. I'll be able to stay vegan, mostly raw, except for some enriched cereals that I'll have with rice milk.

What I ate today:

• 2 bananas
• coffee
• macadamia nuts
• cream of wheat
• gigantic apple/beet juice (Grassroots)
• Trader Joe's Coconut Water
• sun-dried organic raisins
• All Bran cereal w/almond milk
• handful of goji berries
• hummus w/carrots, cucumber, cherry tomatoes

Yes, Please

This morning the guys ran in a 5k and I went along for moral support. We slept in so I didn't eat anything until we went out for lunch after the race. I ordered vegetarian tacos at Le Grande Orange and they were terrific.

Dinner was my favorite veggie burger in the neighborhood.

It was a great day for eating stuff. If I think about it too much I'll get hungry all over again.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• vegetarian/vegan tacos - Brussels sprouts, asparagus, broccoli rabe, kale, quinoa, radish, zucchini, guacamole, pico de gallo, salsa, corn tortillas
• 1 cup Inner Peas - baked pea snack (Trader Joe's)
• decaf soy latte (Okay, let me explain. Usually I am against decaf on principal but I felt overly coffeed already so I went with the fake coffee.) (Starbucks)
• veggie burger w/tomato, arugula (Gus's BBQ)
• sauteed snap peas and carrots  (Gus's BBQ)

The Book I Did Not Do And The Food I Did

I had some Brad's Raw Crunchy Kale today. Not for me. Or you. Probably.

I went to one of my book clubs last night and we had some terrific Greek food from Pita Pita in Pasadena. So some cooked vegan and some raw today. Um... The Figs Were Good?

I had some of that Living Lasagna for the first time in a long time. It really helped to remind me how much better the raw lasagna is at Cafe Gratitude.

At dinner, I tried a different type of Ethiopian food. I really like the yellow pea version, this was the kale version. I teach my son not to spit out food he doesn't like and say, "Blech. I hate it!" I'd rather hear, "It's not my favorite." My verdict on the Kale/Gomen? Yeah. It's not my favorite.

What I ate today:

• 1 cup of Brazil nuts
• 3 large figs
• Cold Pressed Yellow Juice (Trader Joe's)
• Leaf Raw Gourmet Living Lasagne - yellow squash, tomatoes, cashews, almonds, Braxil nuts, sun-dried tomato, olive oil, garlic, onion, lemon, jicama, walnuts, onions, parsley, sea salt, basil, organo (Grassroots)
• 6? I don't know. I lost count after 4. Navitas Naturals Coffee Cacao Raw Power Snacks - date paste, almonds, cashew, fig paste, cacao, sunflower seeds, coconut, chia seeds, coffee extract, green coffee, maca, camu camu, lucuma (Grassroots)
• Palapa Azul Green Frozen Bar (Bristol Farms)

Three Words: Legoland Salad Bar

It wasn't good, man. When I was paying for our lunches, the cashier looked down at my sad salad plate and encouraged me to go back and get more. "It costs the same no matter how much you get." More wouldn't have made it better.

I was feeling sunburned and road-weary by the time we returned from a good day at Legoland. We ordered in Thai food.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• grapes
• green salad - mixed lettuce, tomatoes w/ vinaigrette  (Legoland)
• more grapes
• strawberries
• more coffee

Monday, August 11, 2014

Had another day of eating out and doing a lot of vegan but only some raw stuff.

We went to dinner at a new ramen place by the house. Everything was good but oh, man - these brussels sprouts were crazy great. I can totally see myself getting a couple of orders of these to go as a regular thing.

Next, I'm headed back to try and eat raw at Legoland again. (I may never learn.)

What I ate today:

• coffee
• soy latte (Starbucks)
• banana
• steel cut oatmeal (Jamaica Bay Inn)
• fruit - pineapple, blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe (Jamaica Bay Inn)

Trains and Tostadas

Lunch was at Whole Foods today. I got stuff from one of the 40 salad bars.

Tonight we were with a group of friends and all of our kids. We took the train to downtown LA to see a free concert in the park and then we weren't allowed in because our bags were larger than 10"x10" - WhatEVER. We all loaded back on to the train, got off at Union Station and walked over to Olvera Street. We ended up in a Mexican Restaurant which was pretty good and super loud, so it was perfect for our crew of ten.

What I ate today:

• coffee

Um... Oopsie

I went to breakfast with a group of girlfriends this morning. We were having so much fun and laughing so loud, we actually got shushed by the people at another table. Shushed! What? Too much joy! Enough with the joy! Asshats.

Meanwhile I had my old coffee shop breakfast standby - oatmeal.

Then I made the large mistake of running around all day and letting myself get too hungry. I picked up dinner from Gus's BBQ for the family and I got a veggie burger for myself. It was delicious but I ate it a lot too fast. After I was done and starting to feel sort of crappy, I realized that it had cheese on it. I don't eat cheese. Sneaky dairy. Oops. Those sweet potato fries probably didn't help my cause much either. I'm going to need a large green drink ASAP.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• oatmeal w/ bananas, strawberries, walnuts, dried cherries (Central Park)
• veggie burger with freakin' cheese (Gus's BBQ)
sweet potato fries (Gus's BBQ)

Lots Of Goodness

My friend Amber made these raw/v treats this week and was kind enough to bring me a couple. (The snacks are making house calls lately!) The were fantastic. You can find the recipe here.

Went to lunch with Karen Cafe Gratitude. Favorite meal. No complaints there either.

Dinner was throw-it-all-in-the-pot curry.

It was a good day for eating.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• green grapes
• kelp noodle pasta (Cafe Gratitude)
• cacao and coffee smoothie (Cafe Gratitude)
• vegan key lime pie (Cafe Gratitude)
• red curry - cauliflower, red onion, mushrooms, carrots, tomatoes w/brown rice

They Pulled Me Back In

I made it back over to Kind Kreme today. It was time. I needed one of their fancy kale bowls. I've been trying to sort of replicate one at home and it's just not the same. It was so big I couldn't finish it. And that's how they getcha.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• green grapes
• green salad - mixed lettuce, spinach w/goddess dressing
• figs
• Palapa Azul Frozen Frozen Yellow Bar
• Raw Bowl - kale, fermented vegetables, garlic almonds, cashew cheese, raw alfredo (Kind Kreme)

Not Really A Mystery + A Vlog

My friend came over this morning. As a bonus, she brought her gorgeous baby boy and as a bonus on top of a bonus she brought some vegan peanut butter-oatmeal-banana-coconut bars that she made. They were reaaaaally good.

Here's what happened to the leftovers.

What I ate today:
I know I ate more than what is listed today. I know it. I didn't keep a running list so I am clueless.

• 3 bananas
• coffee
• peanut butter-oatmeal-banana-coconut bars
• celery w/almond butter
• and other stuff. (I'll do better with this tomorrow!)

Enough With The Barking

Today we had some work being done on the front of the house, so in order to keep Teddy from barking non-stop for 6 hours, I brought him into the bedroom and I sat in bed with him all day, while I hung out on the internet. What I do for this family. Jeez.

Here's a link to ten reasons why vegans are not annoying. Written by, you know, a not annoying vegan.

What I ate today:

• So many bananas, I kind of lost count
• coffee
• green salad - baby kale, spinach, mixed lettuce, avocado w/ginger dressing
• Palapa Azul Yellow Frozen Bar (Bristol Farms)
• Evolution Spicy Lemonade (Vons)
• almond butter (Bristol Farms)
• Brussels sprouts
• red grapes

3 Restaurants And A Vlog

I ate out all three meals today.

Breakfast was at Lemonade - it was sort of an early lunch. I had a black lentil cold salad thing with some other stuff in it that was vegan.

Lunch # 2 was at Saladang Thai. I had a vegetable curry.

Dinner was at Taylor's Steak House. I did not have steak.

Many people have asked if I also stepped up my exercise when I went raw vegan. I vlogged my answer.

So this happened:

What I ate today:

• coffee
• black lentil cold salad w/vegetables
• yellow curry w/brown rice
• dinner salad
• plain baked potato
• a few asparagus spears, a little steamed spinach
• iced tea
• coffee
• iced tea

What I Ate Besides Popcorn On What We'll Now Call Popcorn Friday

No, I didn't eat these red grapes today, I chose instead to eat a pound of popcorn. Good times.

The giant bag of popcorn I powered down made eating anything else not so appealing. That popcorn situation will teach me not to grocery shop on a somewhat empty stomach. (Like I didn't already know that.)

What I ate today:

• coffee
• Brazil nuts
• very large bag of popcorn w/olive oil and sea salt (Trader Joe's) More about that whole thing Here.
• Trader Joe's Cold Press Yellow Juice
• Southwest Chicken Salad w/out the chicken add avocado (Shaker's) - romaine, tomatoes, peppers, onion, avocado w/salsa vinaigrette
• iced tea

Not Raw, But Vegan. It Happens. A Vlog.

You've done this, right? Right?

Not So Much

Shishito peppers showed up in the organic box yesterday. I've heard the way to eat them is sauteed in some olive oil and a little sea salt. Sounds good.

This was another odd day. I know, I didn't eat much but don't worry, I'm far from wasting away. I had a regular breakfast then all kinds of busy good hell broke lose and all of a sudden it was dinner time and lunch hadn't happened. At 6:00pm I went for a vegetable tray and another popsicle. (Hot day.)

What I ate today:

• coffee3bananasBrazilnutsofcourse
• Palapa Azul Frozen Watermelon Bar
• Trader Joe's Vegetable Tray - jicama, snap peas, cherry tomatoes, carrots
• Palapa Azul Yellow Sunrise Frozen Bar - pineapple, cucumber, orange, celery, lime (Bristol Farms)

Another Side Of Sides

Today I met some friends for lunch at Palihouse, a boutique hotel in West Hollywood. The restaurant is set up like your living room, if your living room was gigantic and had been decorated in boho chic. The three of us sat in giant armchairs to eat lunch. The salad was greasy and boring. Like they took the greens out of a bag and poured dressing on it, boring. The fruit and the company however were terrific.

What I ate today:

• Say it with me - coffee!
• 3 bananas!
• Brazil nuts, of course!
• Palapa Azul Watermelon Frozen Fruit Bar (Bristol Farms)
• side salad - mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, vinaigrette (Palihouse)
• fruit plate - green apples, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, grapes, strawberries, nectarines (Palihouse)
• iced tea
• green grapes
• salad - romaine, micro greens, cherry tomatoes, avocado w/goddess dressing
• dark chocolate with raisins and pecans
• Trader Joe's Cold Pressed Green Juice - kale, spinach, apple, cucumber, celery, lemon, ginger

Walk It Off

I tried this stuff I got in the refrigerator section of Trader Joe's called Balela. It's a chickpea salad, not raw but vegan and really good. Thumbs up.

My plan was to eat dinner after we got home from Bob's basketball practice. At practice I got hit in the face with a ball so I didn't really feel like eating much after that. I just had a green juice and an ice pack. *Cue the violins.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• banana
• cherries
• Brazil nuts
• salad - kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, green and red cabbage, micro greens, almonds, cherry tomatoes w/citrus ginger dressing
• Taste of Nature California Almond Bar (Got this out of a weird bag of swag I got at the conference.) vegan not raw
• Balela - chickpeas, tomatoes, oil, vinegar, black beans, onions, parsley mint, salt, garlic, black pepper, cayenne - (Trader Joe's) vegan not raw
• Trader Joe's Cold Pressed Green Juice - kale, spinach, apple, cucumber, celery, lemon, ginger
• 2 Advils

I Vlogged, Yes I DId

Today I tried something new while I was trying something new. I tried the new-to-me Trader Joe's Cold Pressed Yellow Juice and while I was trying it, I recorded it, for your viewing pleasure. (Hopefully.)

I have always been the teensiest bit annoyed by people who say they, "forget to eat." Eating is one of the few things I can count on to always remember. Today was weird though. I didn't "forget" to eat, I just wasn't all that hungry so my list is a bit on the small side today. It happens.

What I ate today:

• coffee, you bet
• Brazil nuts
• cherries
• dried apricots
• cold pressed yellow juice (Trader Joe's)
• green salad - mixed greens, micro greens, tomatoes w/goddess dressing
• Caribbean frozen juice bar (Trader Joe's)

*Not a compensated post.

Hotel Breakfast Buffet

This morning, before we checked out of the hotel, we joined some friends at the breakfast buffet in the hotel restaurant. I had my default restaurant breakfast: oatmeal.

Then, airplane snacks that we brought. (No peanuts for me this time. I'm over them.)

When we got back home, we walked across the street to the Sunday night music in the park thing they do here in summer. Mr. Rosenberg picked up stuff for us at Bristol Farms. There *may* have been a few vegan cookies involved in that picnic.

What I ate today:

• coffee
• hotel green juice - spinach, orange
• oatmeal w/ slivered almonds
• mixed fruit - cantaloupe, honeydew melon, pineapple
• banana
• almonds
• kale salad - kale, chickpeas, red peppers
• mixed fruit - grapes, blueberries, cantaloupe, honeydew melon. strawberries, pineapple
• 3 vegan cookies we had in the freezer leftover from i-don't-remember-what

It was a weird food day. Conference food and bar food. I made it work,

Side and Sides

Conference food, you guys. It's not bad at all considering they're trying to feed thousands of people, but, as predicted, there's not so much for me. Breakfast was fruit from the breakfast buffet, lunch started to be a dry side salad until I snuck out with a friend and went to the hotel restaurant for lunch.

The lunch soup was good, but I didn't really eat much of the hummus plate. The hotel hummus tasted like the inside of a cab.

Had a few snacks back in the room that we brought with us.

Dinner was late night room service. As it should be.

What I ate today:

• coffee, and plenty of it
• 2 bananas
• mixed fruit - pineapple, cantaloupe, honey dew
• side salad - ice berg lettuce, carrots, olives
• corn soup
• crudite
• olives
• Brazil nuts
• veggie burger
• mixed fruit
